629-6 trigger problem

I have a 629-6 stainless 44 mag revolver.
The problem I have started to notice is that
with light to moderate pull of the trigger in
the single action mode. As the trigger releases
the hammer the trigger moves slightly forward
as if the rebound spring is forcing the trigger forward.
I brought the gun new around 2003 and It has
never been modified. I don't notice anything
unusual when I pull the trigger in the double
action mode. What's going on? I've never noticed
this before or with other revolvers I own.
I did check the mainspring screw and it is tight

Go to the top of the page, the "Search", and enter "Push-off" and it will tell you more than you want to know. what you are describing is the first jndication of a developing push-off condition which is a result of wear to the single-action sear surfaces. It will do nothing but get worse if ignored. You will also find instructions on how to fix it, but don't hesitate to take it to a gunsmith, it could save you buying a new hammer and trigger for about $150.

Some know-it-all will soon come along and suggest the strain screw is loose, springs too light, springs too heavy, etc. Don't pay any attention to them, they don't know what they are talking about.

Push off is easy enough to check for. Cock your gun (after making sure it is unloaded), and then use your thumb to try to push the hammer forward off the cocking notch. Make sure you keep your fingers away from the trigger. If you can push off the hammer from its notch, you have "push off" and shouldn't use the gun anymore until you get it corrected. If you've never done it before, you'd be better off having an expert do it. There aren't many gunsmiths in your area that I'd trust. You could run it up to Williams in Davison, or over to Jerry's in Rochester. Both have decent gunsmiths that regularly work on S&W's.

I tried your test of pushing on the hammer in the single action
mode with my finger off the trigger and the hammer
did indeed fall. I did'nt know I had that problem until now
I was only complaining about my original post. Good thing you chimed
in. What causes this problem? I have not been keeping track of the
number of rounds put through, I would guess some were around
500 or so and most of that is double action shooting. I think I will
take it to one of the gun shops you suggested. I have been to both
before and Williams many times. Do you have a preference?

It was always hit or miss on whether there was a gunsmith onhand at Jerry's, but when he was, he was good. He was a reired OC Sherriff's dept armorer.

I have had lots of things done up at Williams. I have had one or two poor experiences there, but over the last 35 years, they have done a lot of good stuff for me too.

Just make sure you ask for the head guy in the gunsmithing department, so that you can discuss it with him before anyone works on it. He is pretty good.

As for what would cause that in so few a number of rounds- you've got me.

That is very unusual. It happens when the sear notch on the hammer gets worn badly or the trigger sear tip is worn, but....

It is usually caused by a home gunsmithing expert with big fingers and thumbs, the wrong tools, and no experience that is trying to do a trigger job by themselves, or on the cheap.

If your parts are mim, it is an easy fix, but on case hardened triggers and hammers there is only about .006" of case hardening, and once you go through that, you have softer metal that you will never get it to hold its edge for very long again.

Sometimes it's easier to just buy a new or replacement hammer and/or trigger and drop them in, again, if you know how. They sell here on the forum quite regularly.

I would be able to change the hammer and trigger with out a problem,
Not sure I would be up the the stoning trick, although it seems fairly simple. Does the factory cover any thing like this in warranty? What is covered under warranty and how long is a gun cover under warranty if one exits? I purchased the gun new in about 2002 and no one has been inside it.

Then they will cover it. The lifetime warranty goes all the way back to 1989 and newer guns. Call them, tell them exactly what has happened, and they will send a cal tag for ups or fed-ex at their expense. They will repair it, and make sure everything is in good working order, then return it to you at no charge to you.

Make sure you don't remove the sideplate to look inside it. That will raise a red flag for them, since it'll most likely be evident to them that the sideplate has been off. It's very hard to take one off and put it back, without at least some minor evidence of it, unless you have done it several times.

They are going to send me out fed x labels , They want me to wait till
after the 1st of the year to mail it as they will be closed from Dec 24
