Can anyone tell me how to change the front sight blade on on 629 classic?

There should be a plunger in the front of the sight that needs to be pushed in and held while tilting the sight upwards to the rear and out like that on a Ruger Redhawk, thouh the direction of the tilt may be different. I owned a 29 classic when they first came out, but that's been a while, so I may be off on the procedure.

pharmer has it, no need to depress the plunger, Smith built that function into the front sight. Just push the sight backwards then lift up on the front of the sight, which will come out of the slot; then you can ease the sight forward and remove from the barrel.

If it hasn't been done in a while I'd probably give it a squirt of CLP about 20 seconds before I pushed on it.

Every last one of the 29 Classics from those years (with the full underlug), both the Classic and the DX version, had that feature. The DX version came with the alternate sights tucked in a cool little box. Classic buyers had to purchase them separately. S&W has used so many names and numbers for guns that are the same but different the last few years, I can't keep up with them all - they may have called later, differently styled editions "Classics" that didn't have the interchangeable front sight. I just don't know. I could just be too old to care about keeping up with all the variations, or maybe I just don't have the memory capacity. :)

I know that the versions called "Classic Hunter" didn't have the interchangable front sights. I have owned both the 629-2 Classic Hunter, and this 29-5 Classic Hunter, and neither had them. Some of the Classic Hunter's had the four position front sight on them.

I have a 629-4 Classic with the Power Port full lug barrel and it does not have the removeable front sight feature. On some pics of the 629 Classics I looked at on the auction boards, the front face of the front sight base has a hole in it. Is this a common feature on the front sights that are push removeable?? Mine is solid and without that small hole. I also notice the ones with the push removeable front sight have the pin on the base located towards the front third of the sight, whereas the pinned front sight's pin is more towards the center/middle of the front sight.......that sound about right?

The power port didn't have the quick change sight.
The easy change sight first appeared on the 29-5/629-3 Magna Classic and was continued with the 29-5/629-3 classic & Classic DX. I did see a newer 629 Classic with the fiber optic front sight and it wasn't made with the easy change sight.
29-5/629-3 models with the old style rear sight that has the square front edge don't have that feature.
If there's a hole in the front of the sight base, then it is a quick or easy change.
The spring loaded plunger is behind the sight and there is a cross pin in front of the sight holding it in. Don't remove the pin.
