I have a Smith & Wesson Model 629 round butt frame that I am wanting to change the grip out on. It's a nice feeling grip but it's too thick in the back strap for my liking. I have larger than average hands but yet it seems like quite a reach to the trigger with this particular grip. Has anybody else changed out their grip for this reason? If so, which grip have you put on that you like?

I am trying a Pachmayr Diamond Pro on my 325 TR which is a round butt N frame. I have the Diamond Pro on my J frame round butt and it feels great to me. I am hoping it feels just as good on the N frame. Attached is a pix on the J frame.

If you want to go with a set of wood stocks, I would recommend a set of the retro combat round to square conversion Ahends like I installed on my 629-3 Classic. They feel good to the hand and even with hot loads they don't punish my hands. Here is what mine looks like with them on for you to look at:

Heh, I just had to go look it up from posts from long ago here on the forums. :D It is Moradillo wood and it's a quite nice looking wood, IMO.

I put Pachmayr Decelerator grips on a 329-NG (good grip but it's still a bruiser!) and Ahrends retro targets on a 24-3 6.5" and a 624 4". Also consider the Pachmayr Compac for the N-frame RB. I have a set on my K-frame 13 and find them very comfortable.
Pics: 329 with Pach Decelerator, 24-3 with Ahrends Retro Target, 13-2 3" with Pach Compac.

I had a set of the Compacs on my Terminator, and recently switched to the Diamond Pros. Haven't shot it with them yet, but I can tell I'm going to like them. I'm certain that the softer squishier material will take more of the "sting" out of shooting magnums in a short-barreled N-sized frame.

I found the factory Hogue mono grip to be too squishy, allowing the back strap to pound my palm. I like the way this Hogue pau ferro mono spreads out the recoil. It looks better than rubber. I have large hands, more palm, than fingers. The reach to the trigger is not bad. I really like this set-up.

Sorry I missed your post,, I fully concur!

The new rubber grips on the 629's are terrible.

I like the Hogue wood grips with finger grooves also. Even the standard rubber Hogue round to square butt conversion grips would be a major improvement over your factory grips.

I have Ahrends targets on mine.

My hands and fingers are thick, but I also have fairly short fingers. Makes for a problem finding grips that I like. The grips on my 629 Mountain Revolver below are my all time favorite N frame grips, but they are butt ugly. I also like the no finger groove Hogue rubber grips on my model 69. They make these for the N frame too, I need to try a set.

You are right, that looks awesome! Although, I have a hard time believing it is less shock absorbing then a Hogue mono rubber.

It's not so much about absorption of recoil, as it is about spreading it out. I feel that the rubber "gives" and allows the back strap to transmit the force. That piece of metal is thin. Wood doesn't deform, letting the recoil spread out over a bigger area, if that makes sense. I thought the rubber was more comfortable, for the first 6 rounds. Rounds 7-50, not so much. After that, I put the wood on, and haven't looked back.

I like the wood Hogue conversion grips with butt cap on my 629 6 1/2" Classic. I'm trying to decide if the Hogue laminated Rosewood is right for the 629-1. I'll decide after a range trip, hopefully this weekend.
