629 club

Really!!

Just the -3 huh? Indeed. I have no manner of luck what so ever. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with a newbie.

And thanks CWH44300 for coming back and giving kudos to the correct information. I would have still been wondering and pulling my hair out. Also the Precision CS is a gal named Cathy and she does not respond to...well anything. Problems don't go away until you solve them. Why can't people figure that out? I guess for 7 bucks an hour you can't expect much.

Mr. mikeydio......I will go ahead and try to call LPA and see what they have for me. I really did sucker into the looks of that sight package. I thought it looked baaaad _ss. In the mean time do you know of a manufacturer for a fiber-optic or tritium sight package for my -3.

My old eyes just don't want to acquire through that black blade w/white outline. Maybe one of those "dot the i" sight sets. I think that's just a blade swap package. What's your feelings on that package for old eyes?

As long as I have an ear here....who would be a west coast outfit to have media blast my hand cannon?

WOT Hoyt,

Hang on to that 629-3 S&W factory sight with the longer base, they are not all that easy to find and replace. They are sturdier than you think. S&W changed to the shorter sight base in about 1994 or thereabouts when they went to the -4 version.

Brownells sells a replacement blade for the S&W sight. COMPETITION REAR SIGHT BLADE KIT | Brownells However, you might like to just keep the factory rear sight and just wipe off the white outline. It is only painted on anyway. For those of us with older eyes, the white outline can wash out the notch some.

For the front sight, I really prefer fiber optic sights. Whether your eyes prefer red or green, it is up to you. I have used Dawson sights on 1911's and SIGs. They are excellent. The fiber optic is easily replaced with a razor blade and cigar lighter. Try this link to Dawson's. These would be for your classic model with the spring loaded retention.

Good luck and good shooting. Mike

Heeeeeere we go again

mikeydio

I looked into the links you sent with your response to my question. That rear combat blade is similar to one that was offered by LPA. It is the one Bob has on his -4 rides (p.5). The whole peek-b-boo find the dot in the slot is one of my big concerns for my old eyes and the target acquisition problem.

Back when I made my choice for the LPA package the XS sight package was right there in the function category. They just didn't have the wow factor of the LPAs. Now that the LPAs are a moot point the XSs are looking good again and it's just a blade swap too. Same with the Meprolite and they sneak in some tiny fiber optic rails. It lines up three dots in a row but it still has a slot to line up the front in. I dunno?

The XS Express rear blade seems to be really open for, what I'd estimate it to be superior for horizontal acquisition. They offer a big dot tritium front to match. That's not to say a different color fiber optic wouldn't be better. Gotta start somewhere.

So again I offer my thanks to you and all the good people at the S&W forum for the knowledge and courtesy you have offered. Be well............

I'd like to start a new thread, one that holds interest for the big bore sixgunner, the 44 magnum is my all time favorite caliber and the 629 is my all time favorite 44, but I do have others and like to read about and look at photos of them as well.
Which 44's do you guys have and use the most?
Which barrel length are your favorites?
Do you have any pet loads that you'd like to share?
Who makes your favorite stocks?
How about the leather gear you use the most.
Do you use your 44's for hunting, target shooting or woods bumming? I'd really like to hear from anyone who carrys a 44

concealed.
And once again I need to apolgize for the nasty cell phone pics. Here are mine from the short to the long

lets see and hear about yours

The M629 Mountain Gun makes a superb CCW choice, but the standard M29/629 isn't far behind and either is a better choice than the over-built Redhawk. For top loads the std model would be preferred. The 6.5" is the ideal choice for woods carry since the longer barrel enhances both pointability and power.

Bump with a new set of grips and a new photo:

Model 19 is on a K Frame and the 629 is on the larger N Frame. one shoots 38/357 the other 44Spcl/44 magnum

Although they look similar in pics...the 629 is much bigger in person. and heavier

The pic below is a great size comparison. The two guns are my 3" 629 and my 5" 1911 Para 7.45 LDA. The 3" N frame revolver is approximately the same length, height, and weight (actually a bit heavier 39oz v. 41oz) as a full size 1911. However, it is wider.

I like the idea of a mountain gun but they haven't worked out for me. I've had two of the original mountain revolvers and neither one shot to my satisfaction.
The few ounces they saved weren't worth it to me when the 329 came along and really saved some weight. For my personal use a standard 4" 629 for high volume shooting and a 329 for carry was a much better solution. I know the MG's have a lot of loyal fans and maybe I should try another one, but for now I just can't see leaving the 329 home and carrying a mountain gun anywhere, for the few ounces they save verses a standard 4" gun.

I had to part the Red Sea to get mine into CA but it was worth it. :)

Nice looking gun,
I should try one again, its been awhile since I've had one. What kind of groups are you getting with it?

Thanks, CWH44300. I haven't shot it yet. I've been so focused on my hunting rifles. I'm going to take it to the range soon and have some new Herritt's grips that I need to get installed.

Let us know how it groups, which style stocks did you go with?

Wow, what a great thread. I don't know how I missed it all this time.

I grew up reading Elmer Keith and couldn't wait to get a Smith & Wesson 44. But at that time (1970's) they were hard to find, and very expensive when you did. I ended up with the first Redhawk that came to Wichita (I worked in a Sporting Goods store). I loved it, but it wasn't a Smith.

I've since owned a bunch of them. Most good, some not so good, and some worn out. But I loved them all. This is what I have now.

629 Mountain Gun, this one has a Crimson Trace laser grip on it most of the time. And has accounted for a few Texas feral hogs.

WPWarhawk,
You've got an awesome collection of 44 magnums, the rugers look great, same goes for unfluted 3" gun(heck, they all look great to me haha)Not to many fans of the 329 on the forum, but I think they are a very useful tool for the dedicated six gunner. How do you like yours and whats your favorite load for it? I bet that elk was pretty tasty, what load did you go with on her?

Thanks
