I've acquired a 629, 4" bbl along with the 6" bbl it originally came with. Pachmayr rounded the original square butt and did a trigger job for the first owner. About the best double action trigger on a revolver I've ever owned. It currently wears Pachmyr "Grippers". I cannot comfortably shoot it in this configuration. I "think" something wider at the top of the grip would help, but don't want to sink $$ into something only to find the same result. I usually get the cut in the web between the thumb and trigger finger similar to what you get by limply holding a .45 auto, no matter how tightly I think I'm gripping the 629, when shooting full house loads. I don't have this problem with my 4" Model 57, 4" Model 28, Ruger Blackhawk in .44 Mag, etc. All other N frames are square butt, this 629 is the only round butt. I do have short fingers, and smaller sized hands.

Any suggestions ?? Am I correct about the "wider at the top" concept? Is a round butt .44 Mag that much different from a square butt? I don't currently have a square butt .44 to test that idea on. I'm also not sure that there is that much difference between a .41 Magnum and a .44 Magnum, recoil wise.

Or have I just mentally handicapped myself somehow??

What say ye?????

You could put on a set of round to square butt conversion grips. Also, square butt grips will actually fit on your round butt, but will leave a gap in the back.

+1 on conversion grips. I find the square butt easier to shoot and round butt easier to conceal. The .41 Mag has less recoil than a .44 Mag (in an equal weight gun) and there's no law that says you have to shoot all magnum loads!

It could have been converted to accept K frame stocks, as the N frame round butt didn't yet exist when the 629 first came out. Find out before you spend money.

These are Ahrends conversion stocks for an N frame.

My experience with the Pachy "Grippers" is that they are very thin and I have XL hands. Try a set of rubber Hogues at a store or gunshow that has displays you can handle. I like my wood for concealed carry but put the rubber on for woods or extended range shooting if both give the same "purchase".

Here's a set of smooth Hogues on a RB 629. No bite and they conceal well.

The most comfortable wood stocks for absorbing magnum recoil that I have ever used are Herrets Jordan Trooper. They completely cover the backstrap and are wide on top.
They are made to order from a tracing of your hand.
