Hello, I'd like to put this out for the forum to weigh in. My 629 made in the 80's has a problem with the hammer falling in single action mode without the trigger being depressed. I can make the hammer fall when cocked by pressing on the trigger from its side. Any thoughts on possible cause and severity of problem? Thanks.

Indicative of a push off condition caused by modification or damage to the SA cocking notch on the hammer foot, or the bevel of the trigger, or both. Other modifications can also contribute to this, including alteration of OEM springs and other internals. Damage (breakage) to the internals themselves, including the hammer and/or trigger stud, can't be ruled out either.

I would suggect contacting S&W Customer Service for a solution. 1-800-331-0852.

A lot of guns from that time period came that way from the factory. This was due to poor machining of the areas involved, either the trigger, the hammer, or both. This is one part that needs to be crisp and sharp. Many of these parts were a bit ragged.
