Little background on the project
I use to own a 629 PC Birdsong.
Some people love the color others hate it... honestly I tend to be more of a stainless man myself... but I got a really good deal on it and set the gun up with a bushnell elite 3200 scope. In short the gun shot unbelievable!... But I in a foolish manuever sold the gun.
I've always wanted a gun like the 629 PC Birdsong in an all stainless version... So recently I began looking around and so far I have only found one that fits this description... A Lew Horton version made back in the early 90s. In fact I've actually found 2 different variations of it.
1.
A slab sided version which appears to have a polished stainless finish
2.
This appears to be more of a satin or bead blasted finish - almost looks chromed
This version has the adjustable barrel weights visible and the barrel profile and rail slightly different
An exhaustive search of the internet in an attempt at finding one to buy has come up short, so I'm debating taking another route... and here's where I need some advice:
Is it possible to make one?
Buy a 629 Stealth Hunter
(stock photo)
The Stealth Hunter has a fluted cylinder... I prefer the look of the unfluted... quick call to S&W PC...
They do make unfluted stainless cylinders so at least it is possible to get a stainless unfluted cylinder... could I get them to just make a stainless version of the stealth hunter without having it blackened... nope...
So I can get the stealth hunter, get the unfluted stainless cylinder... then having the gun sent out to get chromed... While I have some of my pistols that have been chromed... I'm not sure how well it would work on the revolver? I theory it sounds easy enough to have them bead blast off finish and chrome everything... but then I might have to send back to PC to have them rework action due to the increased thickness of the chrome? Or another area of concern would be the cylinder face... On my stainless guns I use some bore paste to scrub the cylinder flares off leaving the gun looking new... but I'm afraid the abrasive in the paste would wear down the chrome...
Or.... Just keep scowering the internet every day in hopes I can eventually find an original?
Thoughts / Advice?
Actually I've been thinking... if they replace with a stainless cylinder they wouldnt have to chrome it so the cleaning issue would be moot, assuming they could match the chrome to it...
