They sure did make them! The "no dash", or first 629s made, were pinned and recessed. Here's one:

Early 629s

The 629 was started in mid 1978 and introduced at the National Assc. of Sporting Goods Wholesalers Show on Dec 1, 1978 in Denver Colorado. 139 guns were used to test tooling and production and were numbered from N629062-N629200. The first production shipment of 350 units was in March of 1980 starting at serial number N748564. The first production guns were 6" with the 4" and 8 3/8" guns being introduced in 1981. In 1982 the started production of the -1 guns. At about the same time S&W started the "ABCxxx" numbering system. N serial prefix guns(P&R plus transistion guns) will command a slight premium in price!

Here's my set. The 4" is recessed but not pinned!

I've got a 1980 vintage 629 6" P&R and it's the most well put together S&W that I've ever owned. I guess they really worked hard to get the early 629's out "right".

Mine was not very good and had to be returned when it went out of time.
I sold a very good 61/2 " blue M29 to be able to buy the 629 and am sorry I did that. 629s were VERY hot then.

Hobbie, Its in my personal collection, but the sn starts with N

I bought part of an estate, also ended up with a flaside 95 1st year production..

be glad to show you some time..

I believe I purchased my 'N' serial number 629 6" new in 1980. Interestingly enough, I ordered it directly from a distributor (had an FFL then) and it came in the standard blue box accompanied by a lined mahogany box also. Anyone else have that same experience? With any model Smith? In the years prior to that, all of my 29-2's, 27-2's, and 25-2's only came in the mahogany fitted box.....no blue or paper box. I agree, my pinned and recessed 629 was very well fit.

I also have a 629 no-dash 6" (N841xxx) pinned and recessed from 1980 I believe. It is in like new condition in the lined mahogany box.

But in response to your other question, yes I have a 25-5 .45 Colt with 8 3/8" barrel that came with the standard blue box and the mahogany box all neatly packaged in a larger box with appropriately sized fillers. I also have a 27-2 8 3/8 that came with a blue box and the mahogany box.

Presentation cases

To those with the presentation cases that were included with the purchase! You all have the type of case liners in which the gun points to the right and there is a small compartment for the tools with a lid. This type of case liners were used for approx 1979-1983! During the first couple of these years S&W would ship the N frame guns with the cases. The package would contain the gun in a plain two piece blue box, the presentation case would have been sealed in Cellophane, and both of these plus fillers would have been contained in a bigger shipping cardboard box with the end label on the outside of the shipping box. The covering of the liners never withstood the test of time and would fall apart, even if it never held a gun!

A typical case as found today!

This is what I do with them. The cases of my set of 629s posted eariler all have been restored.

Thanks jcelect and greenmachine for the information about your experiences. I began purchasing new Smiths regularly in 1973 up until the late 1980's, then occasionally up to the late 1990's and have never experienced the two box arrangement. Since the turn of the century, nearly all of my 'new' revolver purchases have primarily been vintage. Again, thanks for the explaination........ I have been curious about the two box for years.

I have two pinned and recessed 629's with one being a model with a 6 inch barrel and one an 8 3/8 barrel. I'm still looking for the 4 inch model which are hard to find and command a preimum.

I personally would like to find a 5" 629. I have missed a couple of opportunities in years past due to cash flow. Now that I have cash, I cannot find one. Of course I have not been actively searching either. :)

If anyone knows where one is collecting dust, feel free to give me a shout!
