638 No Lock

Well you know how it goes,,,,,,,, I was killing time and went into a pawn shop to "look around" and in the case were two 638's one with and one with out the lock. I have been looking for a no lock 638 for some time now and never have been able to find one locally, I wanted to swap out with my 649 and use the 638 for summer carry. It has laminate aftermarket grips and has had some trigger/spring work done, other that being dirty she looked good and will be a great addition to my carry rotation. I was able to get it for $330, and while its not the deal of the week, I wanted a pre lock and I will pay a little more for a good prelock. How do yall think I did? What have yall seen them going for in your area.

You did great. I have a flat latch M38 from '62 I bought used and it shoots great.

Used 638's don't seem to show up very often around here either. They do show up on the auction sites, but shipping and the receiving dealer charges add considerably to the cost. It's also nice to do a hands-on inspection before buying. $330 for a S&W that you wanted sounds like a bargain!

You did outstanding. That price may be so so for other used airweights but there are more of them IMHO. I too have been looking for a no lock 638 to go with my nickle 49 and 649. I would give $330 in a hart beat. I'm my area a used airweight ranges for $300-400. Most $350+.

You did very well on your purchase. I just bought a nice Model 38 no dash for $299.00. After shipping and transfer fees, I'm just around $350.00 into it. I was told all Model 638s were with the lock, and I would have been happy to have found one like yours. I plan to carry mid-range wadcutters in my Model 38 - no +P out of my new Airweight!
