Hello there. Looking for some information on a build date. Smith and Wesson Model 64-5 BJE96@$. #421 stamped near the yoke of the cylinder. The piece was a Law Enforcement trade in and I would appreciate any feedback on when it was made and possibly where it served any active duty. Thank you. Kind regards.

I can't help with the build date, but I'm sure someone who can will be along shortly. I just wanted to welcome you to the Neighborhood!

Prefix BJE appears to be from late 1991 to early 1992. In general, unless you have documentation or a personal history of service use it is difficult to know if a specific gun was used for a LE sidearm. You can obtain a letter of authenticity from the S & W Historical Foundation that will give you the date and destination when it left the factory, but even with police guns this will be a standard gun distributor or dealer. Hope this is helpful.

Welcome to the FORUM! You are sure to like shooting your 64! I have a 64-3 that doesn't get out often because it is my nightstand gun. It is wearing C.T. laser grips. If there are no dept letters on the gun, it is VERY hard to tell where it came from. Bob

Hello there. Thank you for the warm welcome. I have a set of Factory wood grips I picked up from Midway. I have some cast lead 158 SWC loads rolled with some Unique and some with Bullseye that was gifted to me. Looking to find the regulation load the fixed sights were intended for. Looking forward to getting some jacketed 125-158 slugs as well as some more cast ones as I experiment with this fine 6 gun. Any feedback on loads that shoot well and are +P would be appreciated. I have heard and read as well that 38 Special accurate loads are not always HV loadings. Thank you again. Cheers.

M64-5

Hi there. I picked up a fine set of Factory K frame wood grips to replace the issue rubber mono grip. #'s scribed in electro pencil CCC 14632 or the like. Anyone make sense of these markings? Thank you. Piece feels good in the hands with the new grips. Looks sharp as well. Now for a good cleaning.

Might help if we knew where you are and/or where the gun came from. Perhaps in or near a city that begins with "C"?

Hello there. I picked the M64-5 up from Anacortes Sporting Goods. They had them available for a little under $350 or so. Not currently available for less than $425 or so at Bud's Gunshop. I am from around the Omak WA area.

Cook County Corrections Possibly. Not too worried about where it was issued or sold originally just curious.

I just picked up a 64-3 myself from VA Dept. of Corrections. Very good-excellent condition and bore looked like a mirror! Shoots as good as it looks too! You'll enjoy your new six-shooter, I'm sure. :-)

Any good load with a 158 gr. bullet in the 750-800 FPS range should work fine in that 64. I just ordered 500 Hornady 148 gr. HBWC's to try in mine; used to shoot PPC matches when I worked for the IN Dept. of Corr. and was on the pistol team. I miss those days :-(

Be safe and have fun!!

Yes I have loaded some Hornady 158 XTP's. I am certain I will develop more loads using plain SWC lead loads. I have an old Lyman cast book and a few moulds and I think that I will look into casting my own slugs from wheel weights or a suitable alloy and find a load that shoots close to the point of aim. Thank you again for the replies, it is much appreciated.

Been researching different service loads and would like any feedback on the FBI or Chicago load 158 lswc hp +P loadings and Factory equivalents by Federal and Winchester and Remington. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, a place overflowing with great Information on anything S&W. Enjoy your new to you Mod 64. Shoot it, shoot it, and then shoot it some more!

Square butt would be pre-1995, when RBs became standard.

I carry the Remington 158 SWCHP +P in a 3" M-64. I haven't clocked it but I've read Remington and Winchester have watered down the FBI load. Buffalo Bore reportedly has the best version but it's more than $1 per round.

I strongly suspect the M-64 fixed sights are regulated for 158s and the lightweight bullets may shoot quite a bit low. I bought 300 rounds of Remington 110-grain +P on sale a couple years ago. These were shot through an adjustable-sighted Model 66, and I had to hike the rear sight up all the way to get them on center.

Both of my M-64s are dead-on with 158-grain bullets.

BTW all these new to me Model 64 posts would be so much better with PICTURES!

Here is the 64-5 changed out the mono rubber grips with K frame factory wooden ones. Cleaned up nicely. Lucky I jumped on this one when I did as the shops have really raised the prices on this weapon.

M64-5

Cleaned up nicely. Lots of 158 cast LSWC and Hornady 158 XTP's with top loads of 5.0 grains Unique and a few 5.2 grains Unique +P
