I am mostly a 3rd gen Pistol guy, but I have a few early 38 Special and 32 Long revolvers - early 1900's and a Chiefs Special circa 1960.
I just came across a 640-1 Pro Series with dead night sights but otherwise in good condition - no box or papers - wondering (1) pros and cons of a 5 shot 357 wheel gun and (2) anything odd about a Pro Series, and (3) what its worth and if I should make an offer what range.

I’d say offer $500 and see where it goes from there. They’re pretty desirable, but emphasize the fact that you’ll need to get the sights relamped or replaced and there is no box or accoutrements included. I bought a used one about three or so years ago for $600, but it included box, paperwork and several moonclips.

$450 - $500 tops. (No box / no paper candy)

Consider that if you should decide to replace the Night Sights I would tack on another $200.00 in addition to the price. You might be spending a lot more than you realize. Perhaps, it might be in your best interest to research more, and or consider a new or better (used) 640-1 Pro Series 357 with Night Sights.

Best,

Thanks for response - I think I will just pass on this one but in the interest of revolver education a few questions:

Are you saying that 640-1 Pro Series are still available NEW without the safety? I thought they stopped making them around 2010.
This one is in good condition with exception of dead night sights - appears to be low round count.

As for night sights, I come from the Pistol world where night sights are good for about 10-12 years from manufacture date and Trijicon will replace / relamp sights for about $60. Are the Revolver night sights different?

Post 6,
Yes, the 640 Pro (new or used) doesn't have the internal lock.
Various other S&W Centennial revolvers have models without the internal lock.

Some of S&W's revolver night sights are/were not too bright to start.

Note the current $939 MSRP on the referenced webpage. I'm not much help otherwise as to what something used might be worth, other than less than MSRP.

GalleryofGuns.com appears to be out-of-stock, therefore, I couldn't find what its discounted price would be. Perhaps some other websites or other folks have a better idea as to what a used 640Pro should be priced.

I bought my 640 Pro new in 2018 for $659 shipped from an internet vendor. They went out of business shortly after. They are excellent guns. I rarely carry mine because I prefer a lighter gun. But I do carry it when I want the reassurance of .357 magnum. Just my opinion but the 640 Pro is the J frame that shoots like a K frame.
