I don't understand...

A 642 is a Centennial with an internal (fully enclosed) hammer. Conventional Bodyguard revolvers (Models 38, 49, 638, 649) have a shrouded hammer that can still be cocked. Converting a Centennial to a Bodyguard would require removing and adding metal to the frame and sideplate and would not be practical.

instead of bobbing the hammer I want to replace with the concealed hammer from a 642…looks like it will fit, may have to some fitting.
Anyway, was wondering if there is a better concealed hammer to chose

in my original post…i have 642-2 it has exposed hammer
i want to change to concealed hammer …looks like the 642 concealed hammer will work.
My question, any better hammer suggestion

Captain, a 642 never came with an exposed hammer. Here are some pics. The first is a 642 and the second is a 637 with asn exposed hammer. Notice the different frame shapes. The model number should be stamped in the crane area when you open the cylinder.

I'm not sure you could fit a concealed hammer to a 637 without major mods to the gun. Probably as cheap to just buy a 642. Or bob the hammer on the 637. Why do you want to go to a concealed hammer? Pocket carry? If so, bobbing the hammer will usually eliminate it grabbing on to the pocket.
I could be wrong as I've never even looked inside a 642. I'm sure people with more knowledge than me will be along shortly.

the hammers appear exactly the same less the thumb thing on 637
anyway, thought i would ask here but got off to a bad start with model numbers
yes..conceal carry

The hammers may be the same, but the frames are different. If you look at the pics, the 642 has a bigger frame to enclose that hammer. The 637's frame is smaller and has a hole in the top for the hammer to stick through. No such hole on a 642, I believe. To fully enclose the hammer would require extensive mods. I don't think it's financially practical.
JMHO, but I would either bob your existing hammer or buy a 642. Either one is likely to be much less than modifying your 637. If you buy a 642, you can sell the 637 to recoup some of the money. Or, keep both. That's what I would do.

wish i could start this over…i have a model 637 airweight exposed hammer…want to switch out hammer to 642 hammer

sorry for the confusion
You can do that. I believe the same hammer was used on the 2' 317's (bottom gun in the photo) and shrouded centerfires. You may need a stronger mainspring.

I think the 317’s used a 638 hammer.

I *believe* I’ve read the 642 hammer will work in a 637, but can’t say for sure.

I’d say just bob the 637 yerself. BTW, the hammer spur really is only an issue with pocket carry.

It works fine

637 and 642 have similar mim parts

I swapped it out no problems
