I just got this from a local shop super cheap, they said it came in closed and loaded. The “gunsmith” unloaded it and got the cylinder open. Now it’s stuck.

Any advice?

More photos can be taken if needed

Thanks!

The extractor rod moves freely. The cylinder release slide moves freely but goes forward on its own.

Cylinder latch moves forward because it's spring loaded in that direction. The lock only affects the trigger.

I agree with armorer951 and check the extractor rod for tightness.

If not that, I'd pull the front sideplate screw (w/ properly fitting screwdriver) remove the cylinder and yoke and see if anything is funny.

I had one of these 642’s and it locked up. I could not open it. It was loaded. I fired all five rounds in a safe manner. Long story short I sent it back to the factory and they replaced the revolver. I received a brand new one in a factory box with all the goodies. The replacement has been fine.

Will they honor the replacement if you purchased it used?

I bought a used 1982 built 2" model 10 about 2 years ago. It had a cracked frame in the usual spot (on the bottom where the barrel enters the frame). I sent it to S&W. They sent me a brand new 4" model 10 for free (2 inchers were no longer being made).

Recently I've been buying used S&W's. 2 where missing the lanyard pins and one was missing moon clips. S&W sent me those parts for free.

So, if you can get the gun back together and don't want to fix it yourself, contact them and see what they say?

When you say the cylinder is stuck open, what does that mean?

Does it move at all towards the frame or does it not latch securely?

I'm having the same problem with one of my 617s. No matter what I checked I can't figure it out so I sent it back to Smith & Wesson last week.

I was told it would take more than normal to get it back because Smith & Wesson is closed during the holidays.

It' got a lifetime warranty so let them fix it right. No surprise gunsmithing for me.

I’m going to try that after I boil it, ultra sonic and douse with kerosene.

Update:

I took a brass punch and put it in the cylinder that lined up with the yoke. I tapped it gently many times and got some movement so I sent it on home and it came out. I cleaned the corrosion out of the inside. Placed it all in an ultrasonic, blew it out with air, re assembled and oiled appropriately. It works well now.

I lost a tiny pin, not sure where it came from but it fell out. I also lost the smaller of the two springs that sit on the pin inside the left hand thread ejector. Also the sear spring was broken in half. After I get those pieces I should be good to go as the action is smooth now.

If anyone has a blow up of a j frame with the parts I may be able to identify the small pin.
