The barrel has been canting to the right little by little over the past 2.5 years. I picked it up new in the fall of '09 and have put just over 3k rounds through it so far. Now, it is canted so bad the yoke will not fully engage the frame. The ball detent under the barrel is so far to the left that when engaged by the yoke, its forced away from the frame. This causes the cylinder to rotate left of center, which causes rounds to shave off on the left side of the forcing cone.

I really thought it would last longer than 3k. Oh well. I'll send it back but I'm guessing this will happen again unless they start pinning the barrels.

If you bought it new its covered by S&W Lifetime Warrantee. So have you contacted them. Should be an easy fix.

I sure hope so.... might have jinxed myself by misspelling towel in the title. They did my 686 right so I have high hopes. My only bummer is the 642 is my on duty backup and I hate not having that extra insurance.

I can dig it Bro...

Once you get used to carrying that back-up, and it no longer "bothers" you due to weight, or rubbing the area you have it secured, if you can't carry it for whatever reason you feel unarmed even though you have your primary duty weapon.

Hi:
What better reason to purchase another firearm? In my "Day" it was considered a good idea to have a second service revolver and a second "B/U".
(this advice from a guy "surviving on a cop's salary also)

Good advice. (I also did that line of work until 1981)

ShinySix:

This is NOT typical of J Frame revolvers that have no pin. There must have been a reason that it happened in the first place. Hopefully the Factory will fix it up so it never happens again.

I have fired my model 60-7 (no pin) enough times that I have lost count. It still locks up true and tight and has never given me any issues over the 17 years I have owned it. I think you just got a bad one.

I agree it's not typical. Thought years ago I had a M-19 (pinned, Bangor Punta) that I had to send back because it was screwed in too far and the front sight leaned left as you looked down the barrel. S&W did fix it though.

I've carried j-frames for back ups for years as a cop but I always owned at least two, just in case one had to be fixed or ended up in the evidence room.

Pics attached. Got the label from SW. It will be going back to the factory by the end of this week. Update to follow.

Wow! That's bad. How did they let that get out of the door that way? Let me answer my owen question.......THEY JUST DONT CARE! We keep buying them and they will keep making them that way. It must be cheaper to push them out the door then to repair them. Did someone say piece work??

Bull!

S&W didn't "let it get out the door" like that. The barrel was backing out of the threads during firing and the owner kept shooting the gun for another two and a half years instead of getting the gun fixed!

The front sight actually started a hair to the left. It was straight for a while and then kept going right. I've never seen a revolver with a perfectly straightened barrel, but judging from some of the posts on this forum it isn't the status quo. To the credit of S&W the gun shot point of "frame," as long as I lined up using the rear sight only. I'm happy with the service I've received from the gun so far. I understand mechanical things go down and I'm sure S&W will take care of things.

*UPDATE*

Received it from S&W today. Barrel has been replaced and it looks to be straight with the frame. Put 20 rounds through it for function; ragged hole at 13 feet. Back to the streets for this little guy. I'll refrain from posting pictures but I'm happy. Thank you S&W.

Can we start a petition to get the QC guy at S&W fired.

Glad they fixed it for you.
