642 Alloy Frame

I recently purchased a 642 as my CC. I love it so far! Picture attached.

Quick cleaning question:

I know the cylinder and barrel are stainless and need a light, thin coat of oil to help protect them...however, does the alloy frame need a light coat of oil as well? Or is the finish that is on it protective enough?

The best thing to do, IMHO, is to get a sylicone cloth and wipe it down daily. My EDC is a satin nickle 442 which looks like your 642. I do a thorough cleaning after a range trip and use the sylicone cloth in between. My 442 (DOB '92) looks like the day it came from the factory.

Thanks, do you use the cloth on all parts of the revolver, or just the frame?

In answer to your question I use the sylicone cloth on the whole gun, I use it on all my guns. They're cheap enough that I have several and keep one in my range bag too.

+1. silicone cloths provide a great layer of protection. Will remove any light powder residue. And they are cheap. I dont use them daily. But once in a while it doesnt hurt.

Save the cotton wash cloths you would otherwise throw out, clean it well and let it dry. Then buy a spray can of silicone (a couple of bucks at any auto store), spray the cloth, and keep it in a plastic baggie. When it gets dirty throw it out and replace it. Between my wife and family I have a lifetime supply.

I oil the cylinder and the barrel, but wax the frame. This prevents the clearcoat from wearing through. Works for me.

I got a Birchwood Casey Silicone rag, seems a little dry though, I dont see much silicone being wiped on the gun :/

I use ren wax on my 442, not that often either... perhaps every other month, depending on how much it gets shot. still looks like new 4 years later.

I've had my 642 since around 1992 or so. Don't wipe it down with anything. Clean it after I shoot it, then it does get a wiping. No problems of any sort to date. This is a practical robust tool for use in personal defense. Don't abuse it, but you needn't baby it either.
