How could you not love a j-frame snub? I found this new 642 II on the Talo site ...not to be confused with the 170 prefix Talo models.

The 'features' are basically:

* rubber/wood inlay grips
* cylinder cut for moon clips
* PC tuned action
* polished, smooth face trigger
* cylinder flutes and release latch polished
* kind of a bead blast finish? differs from a stock 642

Yes, it did remind me of the Wyatt, which is why they're in the photo.

Hoping to get it range-bound next week.

Hi Mark! Is the DA on the TALO 642 similar to that on the Wyatt? I have heard that while the 642 PC is a lovely little gun, the action is little different from standard 642s. Your take?

I was hoping the only true j-hound would make it to this thread, and he did!

The trigger feel of the Wyatt 637-bobbed is very close to the new 10186 642 II. Smooth, and weighted perfectly. I would not want a lighter trigger than these have for SD. They have just a little less weight than my (well broken-in) stock 642.

The famous 170348 PC Tuned 642 (at least the one I tried) was a completely different feel. The trigger was creamy smooth and must have been on a diet because it needed more weight. I wouldn't buy it because it was too soft.

Last, I'll throw in the M&P340. When I bought this, it was tight. The cylinder would not open without a mean fist bump and the trigger felt more like an exercise machine. A few hundred +Ps has tamed and smoothed everything out, but the pull is still staunch ...more so than my stock 642 ever was.

Mark, thanks for the interesting and informative post. You're WAAY ahead of me on SKU numbers. My '11 catalog does not list the 170348 and 10186 models. Could you ID them so I'll have a reason to buy them?

Aa to triggers, the 342 I purchased used had a trigger pull even a gorilla would hate. My 'smith made it acceptable by removing the mainspring and not installing a replacement. :D It's still a little tight...

I picked up his Talo about a year ago and compared to my 442 it was worlds apart. The Talo is by far the smoothest j I have owned.
That said I like your grips so much better than mine as yours are not only beautiful but practical as I pocket carry. I also like the polished surfaces on yours as well. Congratulations and I hope you have a great time at the range with it.
Frank.

Thank you, Frank, for your findings. You're steering me towards getting one. I'm passing around the hat to afford the purchase. What can I put you down for? :D

Man, I was going to ask you for a donation towards one like yours. :D Thanks for the shout-out.

I had three j's. A 638 I put a spring kit in, a 442 stone stock, and the PC 642. Took all three to the range and shot the 638 first. Nice but odd feel to me. 442 next. Tight, solid pull but secure feel. PC, I thought the gun was broken. The change between the stock and PC gun was ridiculous. I had read for years how much a good trigger ment to accuracy but here I was having it shown to me in real time. The PC gun is that good. I have since sold the 442 and brought in a 686 4" and have put the stock springs back in the 638.

:) Swing your partner in a do-si-do! :) The trigger return on my first Wyatt seemed dangerously light, but my 'smith said leave it be, the PC designed it that way. My answer was to buy another Wyatt... Try to keep the 638; there's always room for Jello!

P.S. You can never have too many Js, you just don't have enough pockets.

I'm having a lot of fun on this thread. Posting about J-frames does this to me. The tribulations of a J-hound!

My 'smith had to remove the 342's mainspring in the parking lot for safety reasons. I think the strut is somewhere in Oklahoma, the spring was that strong. Actually, the AirLite gun weighs even less now without the mainspring and strut. :D

Stay safe, partner.

Your 342 now has no mainspring???? That's a novel way to lighten a trigger pull.
