Went to the gun show today, and picked up this nice NIB model 642 pre lock with walnut grips for $399. They are out there.

Is that a pre-lock or post-lock production gun? I own a post-lock, current production 642CT.

I believe, If I read the book correctly, that this is a pre-lock production - made in 96 - 2001. The product code on the box is 103810, and the first 3 of the S/N is CRW.

You guys are correct - current production. Envelope with fired case - which I didn't see earlier - indicates born on date of 2011. Anybody know if the grips are factory or after market?

Those grips are made by Altamont. Smith & Wesson will often sell a lot of guns with custom grips. So... to answer your question, they are aftermarket but (more than likely if the gun is new) factory also. :)
