Ahh, a 65 is the way to go. Makes more sense than paying someone to modify a "like NIB" 681 to get a 3" RB. If anyone with an extra 65 is interested in such a swap, PM me.

Is the serial # centered so you can round butt it?????????
A 4" round butt 681...... would be nice.
I'm retired LEO & chose Mod 65 3" over all concealed carry weapons - before autos we carried Mod 13. I got a nice 65 which was PR State Police. Accurate & great trigger. Still, I'm about to pay for S&W Performance Center gunsmiths to eval & do ANYTHING they determine useful to ensure it's fit for service. Anyone have experience w factory gunsmiths? Opinions re sending for service though shoots well - not gonna be cheap, but I figure I can trust their work.
Why????........unless there's a problem I'd shoot and evaluate..................carry and repeat shooting as needed.
Yea, I know - if shoots & functions well = "don't pick at it." But there is more play in the cylinder than I'm comfortable with. I have other J & K frames - all tighter. However, it is accurate & doesn't spit lead. I don't want ANY doubt in my mind.
I'd like to hear fm someone who has sent an old K-Frame in for such work.

I'd send it to a private professional before a modern factory nowadays. Maybe back when company custom shops/performance centers were at their pinnacle it would have been a great choice. Although, if there isn't anything wrong with it then it makes little sense to give someone an opportunity to create something wrong. Read up on mechanical assessments and see if it passes everything. If so, save your money.
I wish I had known about the model 65 a while ago. It might have saved me some money. Just seems like the 3" 65 would be about perfect for a carry 357 with natural pointing. Wouldn't be sure until I shot one, but the design suggests it.

Understand why you love them. I never could find one so I chopped up a 4inch to make it a 3inch. My favorite revolver
Who did the work?
I'd love to get a sight DTed on my 64-5. It's the integral style so it would have to be milled.

You asked about sending your revolver back to S&W for evaluation and possible work. A few years ago I sent a 686 in for the "combat revolver" package they were doing. That included an action job, camphering the cylinder chambers and aligning the sights if necessary. I got the revolver back in about two weeks and the work was superb. Shoots to POA and makes very small groups. Don't know what the level of work would be now but I was pleased with what they did to mine.

Modified 681. I did all the work myself except for the dovetail. It has a Novak tritium front sight.
ETA- serial is centered enough for a RB conversion, but just barely
