After a while of searching for a 66 three inch , i picked up a 66-2 in decent shape . It's more of a shooter grade but timing lock up both excellent . No box or original grips , i Paid 800 which is more than i should have but i just had to have it and it fits so nicely in my small collection of stainless k frames , any idea of who made the grips ?

I don't think you overpaid in that short model 66 guns command a premium and it is in what I would consider very good condition.
A round butt of that series is in my opinion quite uncommon.
It will go up in value.

You stole that gun for $800! (Just kidding) I'll give you $805 for it. I recently bought a really nice 3 inch 66-2, after a two year search, for $1050 and I am so happy!
But, I live in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornistan where rare S&W's are harder to find and the paying the "off roster Ca. Premium" was worth it to me..
Congrats on a great gun!

3 inch 66s from all reports are selling for +$1000 unless you get lucky!!!!!

You got "Very lucky"...........:D......

FYI only about 5000 made; -2s through -4s ...... my first -3 bought in..... "198-something" was $270 out the door with it's action polished......in the 80's you almost couldn't give those away....... everyone wanted a 15 rd magazine ............ I was told the 3" 66s had been sitting on a Distributors shelf for over a year...................

Look like Hogue's to me...... checkered ...... going for close to $100 these days.......

I like your stainless collection.I just started buying pistols 5 or 6 years ago.I'm a little slow when it come to J ,k,frames or any other frame when it come to pistols. Will somebody please explain the difference in them to me? Thanks

I've got a 3" model 66 as well. Picked it up in 80's. Has Hoage grips but rubber. Screws in from bottom as stated in another post. Had trigger job and gun melded. Haven't shot that much and put away about 20 years ago.

You sound like me. I recently paid $800 for a high-end M19 round butt 2.5 inch barrel. I just had to have it. I'm still recovering from the cash outflow, but sure do love the gun.

I think you got a good buy. It's one of the best shooting revolvers I own.

. . . I'm a little slow when it come to J ,k, frames or any other frame when it come to pistols. Will somebody please explain the difference in them to me? Thanks

The family of S&W revolvers where the cylinder swings out for loading and "hand ejection" are called handejectors and come in several frame sizes. The very small were designated by the factory as M frames (original Ladysmith series), the small were I and J frames, the medium size are K and L frames and the large are designated N frame. These started out internal factory terms but have evolved into common use.

To understand more about the subtle and not-so-subtle differences, a good reference book is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, currently in its 3rd Edition.

Another recent 3"

Don't think you paid too much at all. I had been looking for a couple years for a 3" K frame and really did not care which it was. I was consigned to get the 65 or 13 ( nothing wrong with either, just like adjustable sights ) as the 66's were getting out of my tolerance level for pricing. Ran across this one two weeks ago on a heckuva deal. Drove 250 miles round trip to get it. Needless to say I was elated. No box, papers etc. wrong grips, but condition is very good and the mechanics are as new.
Sorry but that is the only photo I have of the gun so far.
Congrats on your acquisition.

... paid more than I wanted to... but less than what I was willing to. .QUOTE]

That's a great phrase! I'm going to steal that one.

I would have paid $800 in a heartbeat for that 66-2 3". Congratulations. Enjoy and be safe!
