How would you feel about paying $700 all in for a VG+ condition 66-2 4” with original stocks but nothing else? I won an auction after a few beers, I couldn’t not bid at $550 but once you add the fees, shipping and transfer fees it’s $700.
I loved it at $550 but not so much at $700. Can you get one for much less these days?

In November 2022 I purchased a 66-2 4" in VG condition with orignal stocks and box, without papers or cleaning kit for $700. I thought it was a fair price a year and a half ago. The 66's of that era have continued to increase in interest and price. I think you did ok.

Never sweat how someone else feels about your purchases; it’s an exercise in frustration. Based on your own words you only tacked $150 onto an irresistible price. That sounds OK to me.

Furthermore, I’ve reached the point where I don’t waste too much time hunting for “bargain” guns. A hundred bucks or so here and there is a small price to pay for my time.

That said, I *do* keep my eyes peeled for ammo/component bargains. Guns hang around; ammo doesn’t.

I think you did well. If I lived in a free state and wanted another M66 4” I’d pay that. As for no box/papers/tools why care? You’re going to shoot it right? Not to mention you got the original grips which seems to be getting rare as folks are pulling the wood ones off, scalping them on flea bay, and selling the gun with cheap rubbers.

Neither my my M66-1 4” (that I got as a LE trade in in the late 70’s and served me well as one of my duty weapons) or my M66-3, 2 1/2 “ (that I got used from an auction in 2008) have any of those items and they shoot just fine.

I’ve probably tossed a couple dozen tool kits since buying SW’s in 1973. I sleep just fine. And I’ve never bought a gun for investment and have shot every one of them and carried most of them, including a Colt Government Belleau Wood Commemorative that I picked up used/unfired in the case in the late 70’s.

But please don’t think I’m besmirching anyone who buys for investment or wants those items. It’s just that I don’t. Good luck on your purchase and enjoy it.

I agree with you jer830. Shoot them. In addition to my 66-2 4", I also have a 66-2 2.5" and a 66-1 6". No box with the 2.5", box, papers and cleaning kit with the 6". I shoot all three of them. Based on over 40 years of shooting a lot of rounds through many different platforms and make handguns, in my opinion, revolvers are fun to shoot! I beleive that if you train to be able to shoot a DA revolver well, you can shoot anything. flundertaker, you did well. I hope you enjoy owning and shooting your new to you 66-2 4".

Would expect any high condition four inch 66-2 to bring $700 in today's market IMO.
The cons are the 66-2 is the first revision that is not pinned and recessed and factory stocks of that era are frequently poorly fit and light colored .
The pros are square butt grip frame so you can fit the older nicer grips , serrated tangs and flash chromed hammer trigger, firing pin on hammer and pre IL/mim.
On a side note my 66-2 has a better action than my 66-1 and 66 no dash.

While I'd not call it a bargain, that's about the going price these days. I have seen a few in great condition sell for over $1,000 If the condition is excellent and wear minimal, I'd not shed a tear.

About the market price for a decent four inch. A nice Model Ten can cost $500.

Mine has the "three Ts" and a trigger stop so I wouldn't either!

Remember, Model 66s like that aren't made any more and as time passes, there will be fewer and fewer nice ones left to buy so whatever you pay now will seem reasonable in a few years.

I'm not suggesting to go totally crazy, but when you find a primo pre-lock Smith & Wesson revolver for sale you just kind of have to bite your lip and pay what it takes to buy it. If it wasn't a great deal right now it probably will be in the near future.

As much as I like p&r guns the -2 version is my favorite lol. Just made a deal on a 2.5”, just the gun, excellent timing/lock up, $750 plus ffl fees-we have to use a dealer for transfers here in Colorado. Will bring it home Saturday, pics then.

$700 is a good price. It'll only go up from there. I agree, fees suck but they have to be there for the website to survive.
