66-4 snub: fighting revolver

Hey All,
I have been through "phases" of loving different style guns for defensive carry, and cannot afford a "collection" of guns.

So, I've been through a few S&W 66 snubs and j-frames, but....
The 66 snub remains my all time favorite "fighting" revolver.

I was lucky enough to score this unfired 66-4, and after some range work, it will become my primary carry gun.

Oh yes, forgot to add.....
Before anybody busts on my choice of rubber stocks...

I LOVE the Pachmayr Pro Compac for their thin design and how they extend a tiny bit past the bottom of grip frame, just a smidge longer than a boot grip.
They also fill in the area of the grip frame that would be filled in by a Tyler T adapter.

So, while I've got some magnas and will probably get some "fancy" boot grips......The Pro Compac rubbers are my fighting grips!

I ain't gonna rag on your choice of grips. Pachs are fine grips on a work horse of a gun. I always swap out to goodyears when I hit the range and plan on punching many holes in paper. For Sunday grips I like the Altamont magnas on my 66-2 snubby.

All Smiths are worth including in a collection in my opinion. The cost is not a determining factor in the world of S&W collections.
I have a few worth a lot and many worth a little but they are all important to me and are my collection.

I've got the compacs on my 19-4 snub, without the medallions.I bought them in the late 70"s or very early 80's and they still work great

For about 25 years, my primary fighting revolver was my M-66-3, but it has a four-inch barrel and sq. butt Pachmayr grips, Presentation model.

I've occasionally carried Ruger DA revolvers and briefly, a Manurhin MR-73. But I always felt just a trifle better with my M-66, and it was the gun I qualified with to keep my security commission.

It remains one of the guns I reach for when something goes bump in the night and would be a top choice for woods carry when I'm not hunting.

I had a snub M-19 and understand your fondness for that sort of firearm. I want a M-66 with three-inch bbl. and/or a M-65 with three-inch bbl. And a spare M-66 with four-inch bbl. would receive a warm welcome here.

Bill Jordan intended the Combat Magnum (M-19/66) to be a fighting revolver. That's how the gun got its catalog name.

I sometimes rely on a hi-capacity 9mm auto, as there may be multiple opponents and I think that's a trend. But a skilled man with a suitable revolver is still a potent factor in a gunfight.

Thanks for your photos and your use of those Pachmayr grips. I use Pachmayrs in several models and the discontinued Uncle Mike's more than any other grips.

I don't have a 66 snub but I do have a Model 19 snub and a number of Model 10 snubs, M15, M64 (under construction to be a snub - long story), etc.

I think K frame snubs are the bees knees for concealed carry fighting revolvers and I am about to post that I finally got back to carrying mine TODAY! YAY!

As much as I'd like to have a pre-lock one, mine is not. It is a fine revolver though, especially after having the deluxe action job from and the lock deactivated by Sand Burr.

One of the best "working grip" IMHO... used them for years .....only issue was they tend to grab the cover garment.... in the 80s I modified a couple sets of K-frame "Banana grips" to mimic the Pro compacts.

Later discovered Spegel Boot and Extended Boot grips.....


If I ever started open carrying a 2 1/2 or 3" 66 the Pro Compacts would come out of my "big box-O-grips".



Ditto on the regular "Compacts" that cover the backstrap on a 4" round butt L-frame.

Which dash versions came with pinned front sights? My eyes prefer a thinner (.100) front sight with fiber optic insert on stubbies.

I like em too. Just right for my stubby fingers.

Wish someone made woodies of the same dimensions.

This is mine. Carried for 3 years as a Robbery Detective w/KCPD. A lot of my "clients" called it my pimp gun, but they weren't happy with me anyway.
