Nice pictures of one of the most desirable K frame revolvers ever made! I'm curious... Do you have a partial serial number for that one? I don't often see a 2 1/2 no dash with original black rear sights and especially a factory red ramp... and I'm wondering in what serial number range those changes occurred.

serial number 6k6xxxx with the gas ring on the cylinder.

Beautiful revolvers, I used to also own one. As to all of you who had the wisdom to keep yours and not sell them, I just have one thing to say to all of you.

I HATE ALL OF YOU!

In a nice way of course.

Here's another one. I guess they're not that rare.

Guys,

All the very early Mod. 66 no dash 2 1/2 and 4" revolvers had all stainless sights. Because of what was deemed a "poor sight picture," some of these pistols had the rear sights replaced with black ones and a red ramp installed.

I'm looking for original owners who still have the original boxes and documentation in an attempt to determine when S&W began making the black rear sights and the red ramp standard.

Those who are not the original owners of "no dashes" may have had the stainless sights replaced prior to their ownership. Pictures of a 4" 66 with the SS sights is shown below.

Wonder if this is also true of the snubs, because they were introduced a few years after the initial production of the 66?

Good question.... I'm hoping to be enlightened... That's why I'm asking for some ser. no. info from some original owners. If they also retained the original box the label should indicate "RR" for red ramp. It's the only method I can think of to determine when they all started having black sights and red ramps.

If the person isn't the original owner and has no box the 66 may have been modified and their info inconclusive...unless it clearly fits into a particular Ser. No. range I'm trying to determine.

The model 67 was introduced in 1972 and shared sn#s with the M66.

I have a 1972 M-67 sn# 3K8819X that has stainless sites.

serial number & trigger info as per request

The serial number on this one is 6K8XXXX. This 66-no dash was sent back to S&W a few years ago and fitted with the wide smooth trigger.

Sorry, but not correct. Only the early 4" ones had the stainless rear sight. The 2.5" ones were introduced later and had black rear sights. At that time, the 4" ones had been switched over to black rear sights as well.

Do you have a date for that time frame when the 4" guns were actually switched over? It's possible some of the early 2 1/2s had actually had the 4" stainless sights placed on them after leaving the factory instead of the black sights... trying to establish the appearance and creation of an earlier produced 2 1/2.. Any info you have would be appreciated...

That is a very rare '67 you have with the stainless sights. I don't know what the production numbers were but they must have been very small. I'd try to get all the info on that pistol possible....

I saw this video a couple weeks ago about the 66 no dash. This guy talks about the stainless sights a little bit.

YouTube - Smith & Wesson model 66 (no dash)

Good video, selectgear,

The only thing I saw that appeared inconsistent on that 66 were the "speedloader cut" target grips. Those weren't available until many years later I believe. Stainless sighted 4" guns were all "Football Targets" unless some may have been special ordered with magna's.... If they were I have never seen one.

The no dash 66's must have been around for a long time. I acquired mine new in, I believe, 1977 (?). It is a 66 no dash 4 inch, with a serial #9KXXXX. Blued rear sight, stainless non-pinned red insert front sight, pinned barrel, recessed. Probably of no help to you, just FYI.

I'm getting my info from the The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson.
That states, "first production models are found with a stainless steel rear target sight instead of black."

66 1970 Introduction @ K94910...1974 Introduce 2 1/2" with round butt
66-1 1977 Change of gas ring from yoke to cylinder...1978 Introduce 6" barrel
66-2 1982 etc, etc

Of course only a factory letter from S&W will tell the real story on any of them. Some one in the factory could have placed any type rear sight, crane/cylinder combo on any of the no-dash guns.
