Hello. I am new to the forum (most obviously) and I am also a new handgun owner (I just figured it was time). I did a bunch of research, got myself NRA trained in pistol and general firearms and felt the most comfortable with a revolver. When it came to picking a revolver, it seemed to me like the greatest balance between aesthetics (beauty is important to me) and durability was the pre-lock 686. From what I read it seemed that the 686-4 was the one to get.

I had been looking all over the place for one but not having a lot of luck find a 4" barrel. The guns I was seeing online seemed to go for between $550 and just under $600... and to make matters worse I am in NJ so everything is more expensive here and getting it into the state from elsewhere would have cost me an additional $40-$50.

I found one finally just this week. I had given up on finding one and was going to purchase a new GP-100 when I called a local gun shop (well, kinda local) and lo and behold they had one. A very nice 686-4 6 shot with a 4" barrel. No box. I paid $650 and I was pleased to do so. Of course I am a novice so I may have been looking in the wrong place but as I said I had been checing the auction sites and various dealers religiously.

It is serial # CCCXXXX - would any kind soul out there with access to that wonderful S&W book be able to tell me when it was made and I would love to have the benefits of any advice/recommendations/opinions of everyone here. You folks clearly know a heck of a lot more than I. Thanks for your time.

Hi, and welcome. You did your research and made an excellent first choice. Your gun was probably made in September 1997.

The factory wood stocks look nice but are shaped oddly for shooting for many people; they flare out at the bottom where the smaller fingers grasp it. If they seem uncomfortable to you I would find a set of stocks that look good and fit your hand. Be sure to try them on the gun before buying - it is a very individual preference.

Also, start out by using lots of standard and target .38 Special loads, to save your wallet and nerves. It is nice to have the full power .357 potential, but you will not enjoy the muzzle blast and recoil, especially in an indoor range. Finally, if you are a longarm owner you already know this, but proper cleaning and protective equipment and secure storage are needed. Enjoy!

Thank you.

Believe me, it is locked up nice and tight. I have a family and I don't mess around where they are concerned. I also don't live in an area where crime is a special concern so this is more for enjoyment and in case of possible martian/zombie attack.

It has the houge monogrips on it. I took a few photos and I'll try to link to them in this reply. To my untrained eye it looks in nice and honest shape.

Your "untrained eye" serves you well. VERY nice 686-4! Congrats.

I agree with those who declare the 686-4 to be the best of the 686 line. My 686-4+ is not going anywhere. Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI.

Hi! my story is almost identical to yours....
I did a lot of research and came to the decision that the dash 4 was what I wanted as well.
Five months ago I walk into my favorite gun shop and "Dave" says to me..."I think I got something you might want to see." He goes in the back and comes out holding that blue box saying "This just came in." He opens it up and it's a dash 4 in "Like new" cond.
He was pricing it at $600. and when I made him an offer of $530. he said I could have it for $600. out the door...so I took it and I've yet to regret it.

Have fun with your new S&W.

The 686-4 is the last of the true classic 686's and one I'd pick if I needed a top defense, target, hunting, whatever 357 mag(the -5's being right in there too). Everybody needs at least two of them(one for each hand, of course!!). Wise choice on your part.

And the price wasn't bad either!

I love my model 686 w/4 inch barrel, my wife asked if we could get another but with a 3 inch barrel. Being one never to argue with my wife I bought one the next day.
