I just traded my Kimber K6S DAO 4" for a new 686-6 Plus 3-5-7 5" as I wanted the larger size for range shooting. The Kimber purchase was for a daily carry 357 that I NEVER carried since I just felt more comfortable with my Glock 43x 15+1. Range fired the new 686 yesterday and it's solid as a ROCK and deadly accurate! BUT I am disappointed in the the below average buffed finished (sloppy) AND the wood grip finger grooves DO NOT match up and CANNOT be adjusted to make them match. Got spoiled with the Kimber fit and finish I guess?

I have the same gun. I bought it used in June. I agree on the grips, especially with the 7" barrel. They were too short of a grip with all of the weight out front.
I bought a set of Altamont grips. The K/L Round conversion target grips and they feel just right in my hands.

Round to square conversions and shoot till dirty.
If you feel inclined and the finish isnt too deep, I forgot what stainless steel coarseness I used but a couple of passes and everything was all evened out.

Heck, I've got a secondhand 625-8 JM that came with the grooved Hogue rubber grip and a wooden grip. The wooden grip's open back has a notch that goes a good 1/2" lower than the rubber grip's notch, leaving a gap and making it rather uncomfortable.

I didn't care for the grooved Hogue either, so I bought one with no grooves.

Hogue wood grips are excellent and don't have to worry about panels matching with a Monogrip.

VZ seems to make very functional grips. Have held a couple but don't own a pair.

Not a big fan of the laminate grips, Altamont or otherwise.

Find a new pair of grips you like

As soon as I got my 5" 3-5-7 home I took off the grips & never even took a picture of them because, like most factory grips, I didn't care for them.

For dress-up I've got some Badger grips & for the range Hogue grips work fine for me. ;)

.

Badger grips (all)

5" M686-6 Plus, 3-5-7 TALO, 2nd from the top
2.5" M686-0, bottom
have different style Badger grips on them
.
7.5" M657-5, Classic Hunter, top
2.5" M325NG & M357NG, 2nd from bottom
