I know these threads are plentiful, and I apologize in advance for that.

Checked out a stainless 686-6 (with the lock) and a 5" barrel. Shop wanted $550 for it (used but comes with box and papers)
Gun looked very clean

Good deal?

Sounds about right, especially for the less-common 5" barrel (and even better if it's the "Stocking Dealer Special"). New, they're approaching $700.

Thanks...I may just offer them $500 to see if they'll bite.

If it's clean, I'd say $500.00 and it's sold. See if they counter. But I think $550.00 for that model seems fair.

Yes, I believe it's that "stocking dealer special" you're talking about. It's the 686-6, 7 shot with a 5" barrel with half lug, Hi-Viz front sight, and wood stocks.

I don't know... I only gave $489 for mine... new! Of course, it was late '04 - and the regular stock 4" 686+ next to it in the case was $10 more - go figure! That's the only 686/686+ I have - love that partial lug. The Ahrends are a plus, as is the HiViz... the V-notch isn't a hit with everyone, however. Still - if it is in very good shape and with the box, etc (Yeah, including the IL keys!) - $550 isn't bad. Great pointer - accurate with that longer barrel. Fast target acquisition with that HiViz. Think about the V-notch - I use the apex of the notch orange orb alignment for 7-12 yd targets - and the top for 20-25 yd - seems to help with my wimpy SPC plinkers (125gr JHP in .357M cases - ~880-900 fps - really just .38 Specials in .357M cases.). Pretty neat revolver - grab it!

Ok, here's the deal.

Haven't went back to that gun shop since the day I posted this thread. I had mixed feelings about it but, since missing out on (2) other deals this past week, i'm going back tomorrow to see if they still have this gun. If so, i'm offering $500 for it. If it's already sold, guess what? Yeah, struck out (3x) this week.....lol

Well, it's been 8 days since I posted this. Went back to the gun shop today and the gun was still there. Spoke to the owner and told him if he'd give it to me for $500, i'd buy it. Well, he agreed and it's mine.

I need to pick it up in a few days so i'll post pics when it's in my safe.

I kinda like that 5" barrel. Feels balanced. This is my first IL (Internal Lock) gun. I may just get "the plug" for it.

Very nice Congrats!!!

Just so you could compare....
I just picked up a one owner 686-6 with a 4" barrel w/the lock last year. No papers, no case, and no key to lock and unlock it, for 600 at the gun store. Then again I live in CT and everything is a bit more expensive here.
The GS owner knew the owner of the pistol and that guy only had it for a year, if that. The store owner gave me a nice carry box and threw in 50 rounds of 357 magnum ammo with it, just to make up for what was supposed to come with it. And ya, I orderd the "Plug" the other day :D

I have one of the Stocking Dealer 686's,fine revolver. That is not a bad price. How often do you see them.

Here it is. Got it for $500 and came with box & papers.

As stated earlier, it's my 1st IL revolver. I may get "the plug" for it.

I think you got a good deal. A standard 686 in my area runs considerably higher. In fact, the 686 2.5" is the highest priced, and I'm not sure why.

Nice looking revolver. I recently purchased my first one, and it is an absolute blast to shoot. Enjoy it!

BTW: I don't think that's a 686, open the cylinder and look on the frame (where the crane covers the frame) for the model number.

Your revolver is a stocking dealer special 686 half lug; well worth the price you paid for it. Enjoy!

Sort of .357 Mountain gun on steroids. I can't tell if the barrel is tapered but, dang, that's a nice looking revolver.

Dregg,

I apologize for my mistake on the revolver's identification.

Before I state an uninformed opinion in the future, I'll do more research before I spout off in this great forum.

Enjoy the new pistol and let us know how it shoots-- I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun.

No worries. It sure does look like a 66 with the half lug eh?

I can't wait to shoot this 5"er. May take her to the range on Friday.
