Just realized my error!! No more than one bourbon for me.
My regrets should I have wasted anyones time….Lou

Looking at an S&W ( 686NO) 586 with the 8”+ barrel. Looking to learn if that is an unusual length and if many in this length were made. Also looking to learn more about value. This is the gun alone, no box etc. Looks unfired. My price all in is $ 800.00. Appreciate your input……Lou

Should be 8-3/8”. It isn’t rare, and I wouldn’t even term it scarce however when compared to the countless massive production numbers of 4-inch and 6-inch Model 686’s that were made, you could make the argument that it’s scarce.

The 686 has a full barrel underlug that’s already muzzle heavy and gangly with a 6-inch, it’s even more so with the 8-3/8.

Value, price? Likely a premium, but on the flip side, these are harder to sell as the pool of interested buyers is smaller.

For a clean, high condition but not mint used one, with original target stocks, probably around a thousand these days, where I’m at.

Probably the least common of the standard barrel lengths. Your figure is $200-300 under recent sales prices, so personally I would buy it, try it out and sell it for more than you paid if things don't work out. :)

I agree with the above postings. The 8 3/8" barrel Model 686 was produced in good quantities, but not as popular as nor produced in as high a quantity as the 4 and 6 inch barreled 686. The 8-3/8" barrel makes the 686 very muzzle heavy, but that, combined with the long sight radius, makes it good for shooting targets beyond 50 yards and for hunting. Although the long barreled 686 does not fetch the money that the shorter barrels go for, in these days of inflation, I would not expect to find one that is in good to excellent condition for less than $1000.

How much more weight does a full lug add?
To a 2 1/2"
To a 3"
To a 4"
To a 6"
to an 8 3/8"

The gunsmiths and machinists are going to roll their eyes, but here goes. :)

A 4" full lug L frame is listed at 41 ounces and a 6" at 46 ounces, so 2.5 ounces per extra inch of barrel length with underlug.

A 4" heavy barrel K frame (model 19) is listed at 34 ounces and a 6" at 36 ounces, so an ounce per extra inch without underlug.

The L frame barrels are slightly heavier overall, so...1.25 ounces per inch of underlug?

Those of you with spare barrels and scales, please feel free to correct me. :)
