Ok, I know, I should have used the brass muzzle-protector supplied in the cleaning kit.

What's really worrying me is this. Last time I cleaned my 686, as I was inserting the nylon-covered rod fitted with a jag/patch from the muzzle-end, it got slightly stiff when all of a sudden, the rod got in abruptly and rubbed against the crown. About .5 inch of nylon got shaved and the core material (steel / alu) is now exposed.

My question is this :

Is just one rub against the crown enough to degrade the accuracy of the revolver?

In my opinion, probably not unless you hit it solidly with something harder than the barrel steel. It doesn't sound like you did any real damage. I would shoot it and not worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it either unless accuracy went down..
Invest in a Bore Snake, These work great for revolvers..
