686 ejector play

I have a new 686p 4in that has alot of play in the ejector, is this normal? And if so how much play is normal, i have to move the ejector over a little to start the first round in. It moves freely back inline but i think it would be fitted better than its is. Should i consider sending it back to smith to get worked on? I have a 5in 629 non pined that has a good fit on the ejector and has never been off at all.

If your gun is a fairly recent one with an extractor that has a "Square" shape to it, in other words, the six or seven legs of the extractor are not all the same length giving the extractor a definitely "round" appearance, then quite a bit of movement is common and normal. They stopped installing the extractor pins at this time and the cartridge cases actually serve to limit the movement of the extractor in the cylinder. This was several years ago.

Since you say yours is new, I assume with the internal lock, then you have the square extractor. There is a good chance the gun will not "carry-up" if it is not loaded. This is just the nature of the new guns.

Alk8944 When you say square extractor do you mean the shape of the shaft that goes into the cylinger? If so the shape of the extractor shaft is square with two corners on one side rounded off, but the cylinder is completly square makeing it not touch on the rounded corners. It just dosnt look right to me, my 629 extractor fits perfectly inside the cylinder recess. It looks like they took to much off when they milled or fitted the part. It just looks sloppy, a firearm as expensive as this shouldnt have play in it like this.

The guns I have with the new extractor have virtually no play. Even the eight shooters are tight. I would not be happy with that much play, but you should check to see if it actually affects performance.

@nightowl, The gun shoots fine, no other problems other than the extractor.

Loaded cartridges will center it up, as long as the extractor does not interfer with the loading process, you should be fine.
