686 Frame - Stress fracture or Normal

I think you have an over vivid imagination. Loks like a lot of wear as one would expect from a LE carried firearm.

Hi Forty Five Auto,
The marks I'm concerned about are
on the Frame above the trigger
and below the cylinder.

Here is a zoomed-in view.

Can you see the cracks and possible fractures.

That looks like a typical revolver carried by a working cop. There may be some tool marks there also, but those look like scratches and gouges, but not cracks. Have it looked over by a competent gunsmith or the factory if you want the extra assurance. Too bad that the Border Patrol issued L-frames, the BP-1s never had a chance to land on the resale market because you'd see a lot worse.

Hi All,
I just purchased a consignment 686 no dash
4" stainless from my local dealer.

It was a L/E trade-in with some holster wear
and scratches on the side plate and frame
which I thought I might be able to polish-out.

After taking some pics and zooming in on my PC
the frame appears structurally stressed.

Is this normal?

Were the S&W 686 no dash frames cast.
And is this why when viewing the frame up close
it appears that the frame appears structurally
stressed.

Here in California for $569 out the door,
did I pay too much for one in this quality.

I'm beginning to wonder.

Well after the ten days DROS waiting period,
I picked-up my 686 and touched-up the holster wear marks and scuffs with 'Wenol-metal polish' from my local hardware store.

After 45 minutes my 686 looks pretty good.
Then I added some oil.

That's a Big 10-4! on the 'Nice Crowd Here'.

The Wenol-Metal polish is made in Germany.
Besides polishing, it leaves a protective wax
coating as well.

Nevermind. If the crack I'm seeing wasn't there you'd not be able to swing the cylinder out to load it. I need to stay the heck off the internet when I'm this under the weather.

First time I bought a S&W revolver, I didn't realize there was a side plate. I thought the curvy line I saw was a crack and got a patient explanation from the dealer who'd apparently gotten this question before.
