Greetings,

I have a 686 in .357 Magnum with a 6" barrell, it's from the mid-1990's. It was the revolver issued to Conservation Officers in Michigan prior to the adoption of the Sig Sauer P229.

I'm trying to get an idea of what it's worth. It's in really good shape, it hasn't been fired in over 20 years. Looking around Gunbroker it's really hard to tell. What kind of information is needed to get a better idea? I'm a rifle guy, and have only shot 1 handgun in my life (Sig Sauer P229, I qualified for my concealed weapons permit with that model).

Any information is appreciated, thanks

686's go from $700 and up depending on many factors such as barrel length, configuration, law enforcement association (if it's marked by the agency or provenance can be proven), limited production numbers, etc. In today's market it might fetch $900 +/-.

Yeah, $700 to $1200 depending on condition and exact model (dash #). The 686 is a fine piece. 6" is a bit long to carry concealed but honestly, if it's a pre-lock gun, unless you'd find someone to swap for a 4" model I'd keep it. Carried and wore out two of three SIG 229s/229Rs during my career. For a trigger cocking wondernine, I'd say they're best of breed after the CZ-75. But honestly, after 20 years of being forced to carry the 228/229/229R and now the G19M I'd be happier with a 4" K, L or N frame with full house .357 ammo.

Thanks for the information. I think we're going to list 686 on Gun Broker in the next week or so.
