I have a 686 with a red ramp front sight. Will S&W do the required work to make it a pinned, or even better the quick change system that some revolvers have? Or will i have to locate a gunsmith to do the work. Thanks

If the gun has a red ramp blade it already is a pinned sight. Unless, of course, the insert was done after-market. That is why the barrel is atainless steel and the blade is blued!

IMO S&W should implement the interchangeable front sight across the board on the target sighted revolvers. I have this style front sight on my 610-3 and 625 JM and think they are the "bees knees". However, I've never taken the time to measure the sight base on my 620 and compare it to the 610 and 625, it may be the sight base on the 686 just isn't large enough to accomidate the interchangeable front sight. So, IMO you should make sure you call S&W and post back what they tell you, lots of us may be interested.

I think he is talking about an earlier 686 with an integral ramp front sight and a red insert - those were part of the barrel.

I have a 4" no dash 686 that had an integral red ramp front sight. I had Smith and Wesson replace it with a pinned partridge blade. It took about a month and they charged about $85 if i remember correctly. They mill off the old blade, cut the slot for the new blade and then cross drill for the pin. Finally they bead blast the milled area to match the original finish.

Mine came out really nice. I was very pleased with the work. FWIW

I wish the had slotted grooves like Sig's so you could install whatever sights that are made for it that floats your boat.

I called S&W customer service. They said they will not reconfigure the integrial barrel/front sight/red ramp. There recommendation was to paint the sight white so it would show up better. Oh well

S&W converted my RR 4" 686 to a pinned configuration but this was many years ago.

They really should universally go to the DX front sight.
