686 hogue grips

Does anyone have a Hogue in Rosewood (not the laminate)? If so, could you please post a pic? There's a pic on Hogue's site, but I'm wondering about color / grain variation.

I used to use Hogue rubbers on the majority of my S&W's. I like the look of the factory wood, but they were not comfortable when shooting.

Now I am replacing the rubbers for wood grips. They haven't been mentioned, but Ahrends finger groove grips feel "perfect" in the hand (to me). They even feel comfortable from my M66-2 2 1/2" firing magnums. They can be had from Ahrends in many different types of wood. You can also get them from www.topgunsupply.com

Hogues are my favorite rubber grip. For wood, the most comfortable pair I have felt, even better than the hogues for me, came on an N-Frame I picked up recently made by Badger Custom Grips. I can't say enough about how well these fit my hand.

Yes, the Ahrends are very nice and fit my hand like a golf glove also (shown here on my 617).

However, I'm going to give Hogue wood a try next. No visible screw and the stripe/cap option is intriguing.

Surfdog, how wide are those Ahrends grips? I have found that I shoot best with grips that are about 1 1/2 inch wide. It not only increases the trigger reach but I also suspect that it changes how the tendons flex in my hand.

Idealy I would like to duplicate the way I can shoot with my P229 Elite Stainless, when I am careful I can drill the bulls eye at 60 feet in double action and the DA trigger in my Sig is about as gritty as any gun I've shot. Hopefully it will smooth out with use but I am contemplating tearing it down and doing some honing.

Point is, I was planning on replacing the grips on my Sig until I shot with it. What I discovered is that I shoot really well with fat grips and trying to find grips widths listed on the web seems an impossible quest.

It's a looks versus grip thing. My Grashorns Grips in Elk Stag look WAY COOL! Truth be told, Hogue's that came with the 686 are WAY better to shoot with, especially with .357 ammo.

Scooter123, I measure my Ahrends at 1 1/8" wide at the screw on my K-frame 617. Sorry, I realize that's a bit thinner than you were hoping for...

Thanks Surfdog, I debated whether to get the Hogues or the Ahrends. To be honest, the color on your Ahrend grips is more what I was hoping for. I like the grain on mine ok, but I think they look better if they have just a tint of red in the brown.

Is everyone aware that the S&W 500 Hogue grips will fit the K,L, and N square butt frames? (At least according to the S&W web site.) The 500 grips cover the metal backstrap. Just today, I shot 10 rounds of the Federal 240 grain Hydra-Shock (my Chrony at 1340 fps) in my 8" 629 and it was like catching a good fastball barehanded in the palm (well, not that bad

. Anyway, having that backstrap covered may be the way to go. They are $36 so I may give them a try.

This month's American Rifleman shows the 460 with the grips. The frame has a round butt the same as other late model K/L. I'd double check since "Square Butt Conversion" grips usually mean make a round butt feel like a square butt. There is also a note "(Must Have Rounded Corners on Butt Of Frame)" on the S&W site.

I've had 3 different 686 8 3/8 over the past 3.5 decades and changed all factory grips out to pachmayr they give me good control
