Thanks for the help I have one my Dad gave me that serial # AUKxxxx M any idea when it was made? He bought it from a friend of his and I would like to find it`s manufacture date without having to spend $50 at S&W web site.
I don't have the Smith book YET! If you wait a little while, someone here will come along and tell you the year.
I believe the dash 1's came in 1984 or there abouts but I'm not sure. If you have a no dash, it's safe to say that it's an early 80's gun.
Your 686 was manufactured in 1986, same year they went to the -1. The overstamped M near the serial # means that the gun was sent back to the factory for a safety modification recall. 686's (and 586's as well) manufactured before the -2 modification had cylinder binding issues from full-power loads.
Thank you very much theothermikeg I hounded my Dad about the gun for years to let me take it to the range because he never shot it and it just sat in his gun safe collecting dust.I`ve had it for 2 years and have put 1k rds though it,me and my sons love shooting it.I`m going to mount a scope on it and use it for deer hunting starting next year.
