I would like to buy a 686 plus, but I have been told that is better to fire just 38 special with it, because 357 rounds are too hot for that cylinder. Is that true?

That is not true. Where do these insane rumors get started?

I reality it is probably stronger than the six shot, as the stop notches are off set, leaving more steel between the notch and the chamber. Either way, 686s are strong guns and will last for many, many rounds of full magnum loads.

This^^^^. The odd numbered cylinders are actually stronger because of the offset. Which is saying something, because the six shot guns are plenty strong.

Maybe they were confusing L frame with K frame?

My wife bought me a S&W 686+P with the 6" barrel for Christmas. I love this gun. I have always lovde revolvers. I bought a S&W SD40VE and a 380 Bodyguard. I love them as well. But I much perfer the 357 to my other guns. It is earier to shoot and I find it more accurate. I guess that part is because of me. lol.. anyway, you will have no problem firing the 357 Magnum ammo in this gun. But I would recommend using the 38 special ammo for target and range practice. Much cheaper. I use mostly the 38 special ammo when at the range, but I do shoot the 357 magnum ammo as well at the range so I will be acurate with it if the time ever comes where I need it. Nuff Said. If you get one, you will enjoy it.

As someone said, the bulls and the pucky are messin around here. They just wind up making bull pucky every time they get together.

My 686+ 4" gobbles up 357mags like it's eatin pistachios . . . and that ain't no cow paututie.

TTFN,

Rachel

The 7 shot 686 cylinder is, according to engineers at S&W, stronger than the 6 shot cylinder of the Model 686 due to the fact that the locking notches are set into the thickest part of the cylinder between charge holes instead of right over the top of the thinnest part of the cylinder as they are with the 6 shot version.

I ,also believe that the seven shot L-frame revolvers are one of the very best service size guns on the market. The pre-lock 686 Mt. Gun being my most favorite and quite frankly , I have put several thousand rounds of both 357mag. as well as 38 special, thru mine and have noticed no ill effects. The revolver as only gotten smoother with use. Buy and most certainly use with confidence!

I've had my 686+ for about 20 years now. My 686+ is so old it has the firing pin on the hammer. It's my oldest revolver.
I can't say for sure of the exact number of rounds that I've shot but it is a lot. I used to reload a lot back then too.

So, believe what you want. As for me, my 686+ has stood the test of time using factory and reloaded ammo.
Mongo.

PS. I call my 686+ Little Harry. I call my 629 Classic Big Harry (as in Dirty).

I'm Now part of the S&W family

Hi gunslingers,
Welcome me to your world... Well purchased my S&W a week ago. Its actually my second gun. I'm new to gun ownership. I'll tell you what. Took it to the range yesterday. Boy did it give me a warm welcome. Its beautiful. It blasts and it rumbled all the sound waves in the gun range. When I was firing this Beauty the gun range went silent. Ive been told people can tell the sound of a .357. Guess they wanted to listen and appreciate brute force.
My 686plus is a masterpiece.

I would like to think S&W and the 2 other BIG 3 of US gun manufacturers. Are far enough along in R&D that they know what not to sell us. I think the days of Air weight alloy framed pistols made to fire cartridges they can not handle are long gone.

I visited the S&W factory a few years ago and sat in on a revolver workshop. The instructor who had bunches of years ( don't remember the exact #) with S&W, said the 7 shot 686 plus was actually stronger than the 6 shot 686 because of the off set cylinder stop notches.

The 7 shot has the notches cut between the chambers , where as the 6 shot has the notches cut over the chambers.

True indeed. I've done:eek: the same thing. However, Try it next time with a 44 mag. the same effect but better.
