I load for and shoot a 460 XVR with a Burris 2x7 scope. I'm looking for a companion gun. I'm thinking a 686 with a 8 3/8 tube and similiar scope would fit the bill. Using roughly a 1/3 less powder and 1/2 the bullet, it should be a bit cheaper to shoot. Also, I don't own an "L" frame.

Does anybody shoot a long tube 686 as a range/target gun?

I have a 4" 686-1 that I've only shot at the range and love it.It has a real smooth DA trigger and shoots better than me. I would also love to get one with the longer barrel.

I shoot a 6'' 686, It's accurate and fun to shoot. Most of the time it is the one most used by others that shoot with me. It is a great gun to shoot while the barrel of the .460 cools down and it cost about 25% of what it costs to shoot the .460. Problem is, then you'll need a companion for it.......like a .357 lever.

I have a 686 power port with a red dot scope as my range/hunting gun. But, I now have a 617 set up the same way as my 686. The recoil is less but, I do get to shoot more bullets down range.

I am not fond of the 686's normal full lug - so, when this partial lug 5" 686+ became a 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive' ~2004, I grabbed one. It came with the HiViz and a V-notch, as well as the Ahrends shown. Oddly, it was $10 less than a standard 4" 686+ - go figure. It has a great balance, decent trigger, etc. I have a Weigand rail, rings, and a Weaver H2 2x28 scope... but I use it on my 6" 629 - great combo there.

The 627 Pro is there for a reason - it's my favorite .38/.357M - great trigger, easily changed front sight, moonclip ready, and an 8-shooting N-frame - fantastic! The Ahrends Retro Targets help, too.

I shoot my 6" 686 more accurately than any other revolver that I own (rimfires excepted). I dunno if it's me or the gun but we just work well together.
