686: Round Butt or Square Butt?

Which do you like better? I like the looks of the round butt, and the feel of the square butts.

I agree, 4" is the longest barreled revolver I will use RB grips on.
with my 6" 686 wears SB grips and you need them to get the right feel and balance of that longer barrel.

I much prefer square to round butt revolvers. I have very large hands and I'm just a lot more comfortable with the larger gripping surface of the square butt grip. So much so that I recently put some Nills "coke" round-square conversion grips on my 686-6. Makes all the difference in the world to me!

I have a 4" 686+. I voted for square butt because, for its weight, it feels right in my hand. Its frame allows either square or round butt, but came with a square butt grip that hooked up with a "stirrup" at the bottom of the grip frame into which the grip holding screw, um, screwed. That was a good grip. When I switched over to a Crimson Trace laser grip, that "stirrup" prevented me from installing it until I got inspired and yanked it out. The CT grip is just as good, indeed maybe a little better as a grip than the original, and it lights my fire. (Couldn't resist that!)

Cordially, Jack

I like the looks and feel of square butt, particularly with target grips. Round butt is just better, IMHO, for concealed carry.

I find rounds to be more pleasing to the eye but, prefer shooting with squares.

Hey mheideman, Those sure are some fine lookin' weapons. Who makes those gray and black laminate grips ? I never saw that line of grips. I use Eagle Classics in Rosewood. They're fine grips but lack the visual impact of yours...........one eye joe

Hi you bet like every one says in here shorter barrel go for the round and the longer the barrel go for the square they look great either way you decide which you want and the one that feels comfortable to shoot...thats what counts.

I won't even tell you which I prefer, but I can assure you that it is not based on looks. If you like the feel of the SB, that is certainly the way to go.

I think Pred has it just about right. I would say 2 1/2 - 3" round butt. 4 - 8 3/8" square butt. Not just for looks, but I think longer barrels need more grip hanging off the bottom for better balance. But I also agree with whatever feels best for you and whatever gets you closer to the 10 ring.

Went out shooting today, and was much happier with the square butts. Round butts are now for sale if anyone's interested.

Hey mheideman, I POSTED A REPLY TO YOU ABOVE WHICH YOU OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T READ. I LIKE THOSE GRIPS A LOT-- I PREFER THE SQUARES. WHO MAKES 'EM ? ? THANKS..one eye joe

I voted SQ Butt...

I like the grips w/ medallions! Do you know of another source for nice wood SQ Butt conversion grips w/ medallions?

My only issue with www.gungripsupply.com is that all their woods are 'laminate'. I think I would prefer 'solid' Rosewood.

Laminate grips do look different than solid wood grips, correct?
