686 series- favorite dash?

I'm stuck with a 686-3 6" and love it:) When I got it it had rubber grips, did a little work on a guys 586-1 that had original wood grips and he said he would trade me rubber for wood, well that made me happy and made my gun look better!

THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL 686-3, KARL. I CAN'T IMAGINE SOMEONE ACTUALLY WANTING TO SWAP THOSE BEAUTIFUL FACTORY STOCKS FOR A SET OF UGLY GOODYEARS. THERE IS NO ACCOUNTING FOR PERSONAL TASTE.......

My favorites are a 4" 686 no dash I had round butted in the 80s and the action polished.... and a 586-4 factory round butt (95/96)...... LOVE Round butts!!!!!!

Have a 681 I would love to round butt but the serial # won't cooperate !!!!

I understand the mindset.

But how many times have we read a post with words to the effect, ".... treat it right and your grandkids will be shooting it!" I've seen it a hundred times. Empty words?

How many of us have a gun handed down from a grandfather? Or father? How many of us have Smiths that are already 50 years old? It's only 1965. Guns from that era are bought and sold everyday. They're not antiques. Many are just shooters.
WHEN IT COMES TO FINE FIREARMS, WE ARE ONLY CUSTODIANS. WITH REASONABLE USE, AND TLC, THEY WILL LAST FOR GENERATIONS PAST OUR LIFETIMES.......

best is tough to choose...

hard to pick a favorite...
686-0 CS-1 2M 3 INCH
686-3 6 INCH
686-6 5 INCH HALF LUG DEALER SPECIAL

each one is great for different reasons...
but it is a close tie between the 3 inch and 5 inch...

Well .... my only 686 is a 4 inch -4. Probably the most comfortable S&W I own. And the difference on the dashes? Personal preference it seems to me!

Seems like a lot of 2 1/2 inchers are -4s, as mine is. Mine has the flash chromed hammer and trigger, while others are case hardened. Apparently, they were made both ways.

I think I like the flash chrome better.
