686+ vs 1911 in SHTF scenario

SHTF handgun

I love them both. There are a lot of arguments made about capacity being the most major consideration. Like others, I feel a lot of the choice would have to be based on the circumstances. Are we talking a TEOWAWKI, with no foreseeable chance of recovery? If so, I'll take the more mechanically reliable revolver, because magazines and recoil springs don't last forever. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn up my nose at a 1911. I have a number of them and they are great fighting guns. I'm just looking at the potential for repair and parts replacement.

'course, it's been said other ways, but if the SHTF, you better be thinkin' that your sidearm is your defensive weapon in order to regain use of your battle rifle.

the two best proven combat handgun designs ever built IMO. For a shtf sidearm simply cannot go wrong with either option.

I have hundreds of rounds on 1911s for every round through revolvers, so my abilities are much greater with the auto.
When people talk about SHTF scenarios like hiking in bear territory, I'd like my chances better with 9 rounds of hot 10mm than with six rounds of .44 Mag, as I know I can place all nine rounds of 10 with greater accuracy and speed than three or four rounds of .44.
I carry a compact .45 that holds 6+1, but even if it were 4+1 I'd prefer it to a compact revolver in the same chambering.

If it is only one, then the 1911 is what to bring.
Ammo can be taken off the dead in the field.
I reckon most of 'em will have 9mm, .40, or .45.
You might be a while tryin to strip some revolver ammo from the typical dead you might encounter.

Make the same evaluation for what your rifle round will be.
I'm thinkin' there will be a ton of 7.62x39 and 5,56x45 layin'around.
Probably a quantity of 7.62x51 & 30-'06 as well.
Your shotgun will be a 12 ga. pump.

Arm the bug-in group with the all the other stuff.
Be sure they have plenty much ammo.
Ideally, they will be armed same as you.

"Rick" has survived for what 3-4 years with his trusty 6" .357......

only gun to make it the whole way..... and never an issue with ammo availability.... what's not to love??????

LOL

Absolutely the Model 686+ 7 Shot ,
No FTF, FTE, Stovepipes, bad Mag springs or dropped mags, snapped extractor claws and in the case of a bad primer or round that goes "Click" just pull the trigger again for fast follow up "BANG" without having to rack a slide to clear the chamber.

Use whichever you are better with...by that I mean which you can get into action fast, with an accurate first shot, and can send numerous accurate follow-up shots down range in a hurry. Quick and accurate beats the caliber debate every time.

. .357mag is more powerful and only 2/3 the weight of a .45acp but the 1911 is faster to reload and has higher capacity. But would the 686 end up being more reliable in the long run? All these ideas are what keep me up at night. What say you!

Have you ever seen someone who has practiced reload with a speed-loader? These guys are just as fast as most people can reload an auto.

All it takes is practice.

Come on man, be real. I love my wheel guns, but most normal humans don't have the time or the fortitude to "practice" enough to reload a revolver as fast as a semi. Sure it's possible, but is it likely? No. Is it remotely likely? No.

I only have revolvers now. mainly .38 is all I shoot and carry these days. I have arthrites in my hands and back,I barely can rack a slide on a pistol.

My first impulse was to post that if TSHTF I don't want S on my fine revolvers so I'd rather have my rattiest 1911ish foreign automatic out. I did think of one tid bit that might interest the O.P.

On a side note, the 686 is cut for moon clips so reload time is still quicker than a speed loader. [...]

I suggest leaving 686 moon clips for action pistol or other matches. They are much thinner than moon clips for rimless cartridges which makes them too easily bent. Main spring energy gets wasted flattening bent clips resulting in missfires.

I wouldn't feel.....

I wouldn't feel under armed with either one but if the 1911 is good in the military field for more than a 100 years, it's good enough for me. At least they worked good in Banzai charges.

Of course a 686 Plus with some speed loaders or cut for moon clips would be a really close competitor.

Come on man, be real. I've yet to see a normal human in the US experience a SHTF scenario. Sure it's possible, but is it likely? No. Is it remotely likely? No.

If it ever gets to the point where we won't be "allowed" to own them, then the SHTF has already occurred. Let's see them try to take them.

Ummmm - they already have. I live there once. Then came the 10 day wait, along with a no more than one per 30 days....

Then came the "you can keep them, but you must register each for $25" (5 per card as I remember)...

Then came the "as of Jan 1 next year, you can't ever buy these again because they shoot down commercial airliners"......so I bought one a few weeks before Jan 1 just because...

Then I moved.....
