6906 Frame Crack

There are two distinct hairline cracks. One on each frame rail, near the front of the frame rails.

It was a dept issue gun given to the officer on retirement. The dept no longer has any of these on hand to exchange. I am told S&W no longer makes these and will not offer to repair this.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Can it be welded and the rails milled?

Would you depend on a handgun that was cracked on two sides and welded and milled to fix it? Jus' sayin'......

To my way of thinking it sounds like a coffee-table trophy from now on.

Completely disassemble the lower and sell both lower parts and complete slide to make up some cash loss. I know I would buy a slide to have a 5906 SSV.

IIRC....... there have been posts where Smith has honored their warranty by offering a 'newer" gun as a replacement???????????

In this case maybe a M&P Compact 2.0????????????????????

exactly. The smith and wesson warranty is a lifetime one, they'd have to either fix it or offer a comparable trade.

With the age and wear on the 6906 they might offer an M&P variant at a reduced price but they no longer have any spare parts to replace or repair the alloy frame and they won't ship it back if it is sent in. I also doubt they will offer to replace for free but you never know. Smith has bent over backwards time and time again for LE customers in the hopes of keeping them happy and from turning to a competitor.

Personally, I have recommended S&W thousands of times over the years. They make good (sometimes outstanding) products but their customer support is second to none, in my humble opinion!

S&W's policy on gun repair used to be if it is their fault they replace it free and if it is not their fault they replace it with any gun at their cost. I bet that is unchanged from when they did that for me. If the gun is no longer made they'll let you pick another, free or at cost.

You have nothing to lose by sending it back , I'm sure they will offer you a exchange
To a current Model , you just have to pay shipping to them , And it will have to go to a dealer in your State since it's a new serial number and Model , If it were just a repair it than could be sent back to you .
Something else to consider is if you can find a lazer welder to fix it , I once had a todo that for a old Winchester for a customer, I had a relationship with a watchmaker
that did it , I'm not talking about a jewelry store, they actually made parts.

Your gun? If you're not the original purchaser, the "lifetime" warranty does not apply. They "may" go out on a limb and offer something.

Retire it and display

My suggestion is to retire the pistol and put it on display. Check with S&W to see if they'll help in any way, of course, but I wouldn't expect much. I could be wrong; in fact I'm wrong a lot. If your friend really likes shooting the 6906, there are a pile of them on the online auctions for as little as $225; pick and choose for $325. I'm sure he could find something else he likes just as much with a little searching. Good luck!

There have been a couple of posts on this forum where - faced with an unrepairable 3rd gen - S&W offered a discount that really wasn't much if any better than buying a new S&W at Buds or similar.
