This morning I found a 696 3" with a serial # of CBP89xx.

In the SCSW, they note that the introduction serial prefix for this model was CBS2xxx.

I know this is S&W we're talking about, but wouldn't a CBP number pre-date a CBS number?

It's marked Mod 696 on the yoke.
The seller is asking $695 but probably will deal a little.

Thanks,
Craig...

I paid more than that for my 696 no dash two years ago....
that isn't a bad price at all, even better if he will take a bit less for it.
I can't help you with the serial number question, but a 696 is a great revolver....

I agree with the price being decent. The gun looks to be in fine shape too.

What holster do you use?

Craig..

The rule for S & W serial numbers is there is no rule without exceptions :) . The CBP frame was probably pulled out of the stockpile after the CBS gun, and there you have the 696 you see. If you want it it's a good price.

My 696 no dash has a CBN-xxxx serial #. I've noticed other discrepencies in my SCSW #3, but considering the odd ways of Smith & Wesson, one can hardly fault Nahas and Supica. They always make an effort to update info with the next edition. Considering that the 696 has reached "cult status", I suppose any price south of $750 would be fair these days. I saw one at a show two weeks ago.......Looked to be around 98% with original box and paperwork. Asking price was $1000 or best offer.

There was a 696 no-dash at the gunshow last weekend in Atlanta and the gent selling it had $1,595 on the tag and musta wanted to sell it, as he had it "marked-down" to $1,295.......truly is attaining cult-status.

So, good on you for finding any-dash for under $750.

Should I be happy with a "-1" or should I hunt for a no-dash? Has anyone actually had issues with the MIM stuff?

Wow I am happy to hear about this!
I got one less than a year ago for $400 OTD.
Great shooting snub as well!

That's pure fantasy, nothing more. :o

I just pulled mine out and looked at it. CBP84xx(696 no dash). I ordered it when they were first announced. I assume??? Its from the first run as I had it in hand long before they started showing up anywhere else.

After buying the one I have I would'nt hesitate to get another. Since new run of the mill 3" 686's are going in the $750-$850 range a 696 under $700 would be a decent buy. I paid $425 OTD for mine and do hear of guys getting them under $500 so there are some deals out there if you can wait long enough.

Pictures are needed gentlemen.

Here is mine, nothing fancy but I have a set of RB factory S&W bananna grips that I think will look good on it if I ever get around to putting them on.

A year ago when I worked at Cabela's I bought a no dash for $400 from the library. Great shooting gun. I didn't know it's value until after I sold it. Oh well. I like my 29 better anyway.

That is obscene!!!

I just hope that nobody pays this crook what he's asking.

Only differences I see in my 696 and 696-1 is that the firing pin is hammer mounted and the barrel lettering is engraved on the 696 and the hammer is internal and the barrel lettering is roll etched on the 696-1.

There is also...

A little more weight on the frame at the frame/cylinder window. On the 696 it is maybe 1/4 inch but on the -1 it is about 1/2 longer. -1 has mims parts.

Wow, cant beleive this thread is almost 18 months old. The 696 I had back in Oct 2010 got sold in early 2011 for $1000. I did throw in a box of ammo, a holster, and 2 HKS speedloaders. Although it was a nice gun I just could'nt fall in love with it and used the money I got for it to buy a 625 in 45 ACP and a 629 Mountain gun. I'd buy them all day for the $425 i paid for mine but not for what they are selling for now.

I'm loving mine...

I like it so much I will be getting a RCBS Rock Chuck kit. I will be reloading for the 44 Spl. And the 357 Magnum. Well glad to see you more than doubled your money and got something you do like!:)
