696 .44 Question

My no dash that I received as a tenth anniversary present.

A year ago when I worked at Cabela's I bought a no dash for $400 from the library. Great shooting gun. I didn't know it's value until after I sold it. Oh well. I like my 29 better anyway.

There was a 696 no-dash at the gunshow last weekend in Atlanta and the gent selling it had $1,595 on the tag and musta wanted to sell it, as he had it "marked-down" to $1,295......

That is obscene!!!

I just hope that nobody pays this crook what he's asking.

Only differences I see in my 696 and 696-1 is that the firing pin is hammer mounted and the barrel lettering is engraved on the 696 and the hammer is internal and the barrel lettering is roll etched on the 696-1.

There is also...

A little more weight on the frame at the frame/cylinder window. On the 696 it is maybe 1/4 inch but on the -1 it is about 1/2 longer. -1 has mims parts.

Wow, cant beleive this thread is almost 18 months old. The 696 I had back in Oct 2010 got sold in early 2011 for $1000. I did throw in a box of ammo, a holster, and 2 HKS speedloaders. Although it was a nice gun I just could'nt fall in love with it and used the money I got for it to buy a 625 in 45 ACP and a 629 Mountain gun. I'd buy them all day for the $425 i paid for mine but not for what they are selling for now.

I'm loving mine...

I like it so much I will be getting a RCBS Rock Chuck kit. I will be reloading for the 44 Spl. And the 357 Magnum. Well glad to see you more than doubled your money and got something you do like!:)

I don't remember what I paid for my no-dash, new, way-back-when. However I won't part with it for any amount.

I just purchased one from a member here for about $800. I've been looking for awhile and thought it was a fair deal even though it is a later model. If they don't bring it back, which they probably won't, a 696 is going to cost a lot more in a few years, MIM parts and all. Jim

My 696-1, s/n CDN3xyz, was bought new in early '03 at the lgs's regular sale price of $439 + s/t. It has the frame-mounted fp and rolled, ie, not laser-etched, barrel markings. The tapered barrels, a la the MG's, used laser-etching - my 625-7 MG in .45 Colt, which started my S&W-madness Labor Day '02... and had the nice looking laser etching. Most of ten years later, lots of cleaning has almost erased the markings! I'm glad my 696-1 has rolled (engraved) markings!

My gun pusher came across this one a couple years ago for $550, and I'm still peeved at him, I'd seen a grungy dash-one a week before for $900 and his was immaculate. Negotiations continue.

My no dash starts with a CBT. Great shooter got it about a year and a half ago for $600. Wouldn't sell it for twice that.

It's odd that I stumbled across this old thread today.

I had forgotten all about the 696 until going through a box of old gun mags as part of the moving process I came across one with a cover story on it from when it was introduced.

I kept the mag because I'm kicking around the idea of getting a .44 Special since my pa-in-law bought himself a Charter Arms late last year.

Sadly I won't be getting a 696 any time soon since things haven't worked out for me over here in SC and I'm going back to AL for less money (but at least I get to keep a home I love) so there will be no new guns for me for awhile while we live on a tighter budget.

Although I have kicked around the idea of maybe trading my CZ 75B for one. I figure I might regret that though.

I have shot the Charter Arms in 44 Spl. I have the 696. No comparison between the two - except price. Beg, borrow, steal ( well don't go that far) :-) the money and get the 696. The gun is built like a tank.

Well, I have asked my wonderful wife to carve me $700 our of our budget between 10/6/12 and 10/6/13 (I'll be 44 years old, get it?).

I had been thinking of getting a 4" 629 to go along with my 6.5" 629 Classic but I'm really thinking about the 696 now.
