I've asked this question once before with no luck in finding a source. So, I'm going to try again.

I'd like to have my 745 slide milled to accept a red dot. Anyone have a source that might take on this task?

BME made me one of his adapters and it is okay but the red dot sits too high for my taste. Primary Machine is one of the best for milling slides but they do not do the 745. Any suggestions? Thanks. bob

Hi Bob,
not sure that milling the slide is doable... (but I want to do some experiments when I get a cheap slide)

however, there are some optima bases that work fine and aren't too high... I am not 100% sure they will fit a M745, but they probably will...

You can find them around for $6 to $16 depending on the vendor. They are made of aluminum and attach to the slide using the sight dovetail.

(same base)

This optima base uses a SHIELD pattern. Only Shield RMR, Leupold Delta Point Pro and Sig Sauer Romeo Zero fit.

Here is a link to my project with some other info that could be helpful

Two 5906 Frankenguns (two-tone, cuts, serrations, RMR)

hope this helps

Here is a 645 that had an adjustable sight on it before milling. Done by previous owner with a milling machine. I wonder why the sight had to be set back on the slide. Maybe locating screws?

Hi,

Could you post some pictures from the top?

Also, some pictures with the mount removed, so we can see how the cut was made?

thanks

Here's more pictures. I added 2 pics to the above post. It looks like the sight could be mounted all the way to the front of the sight cut. The other slide I used for comparison is a 645.I didn't do it so all I can do is guess why it was done that way. If you want more pics let me know before I put it back together.

Red Dot Mount

Hello,
since the top of the 745 slide is flat to begin with, the Zero Mount from Tandom Cross is fairly thin, and I mount screw the red dot right to it.
Most likely there would be no difference as the mount your using is rather tall. The TC Mount is 3/16 thick, and over all dimension from the slide surface to the back of the Vortex Razor is 11/16ths. I modify the TC mount by cutting off the long tang, since it's not needed on other pistols, this makes the mount the same foot print as the Razor. I add another flat head screw to the mount, and it's not going to move. This way you can keep your slide stock with exception of the 2 tapped holes, #8 or #10. I will PM you my e-mail address if you were interested in getting it mounted, Also I could remove some stock from the top of the slide without exposing the springs. Or remove 1/16 from the bottom of the TC mount, only the part that straddles the slide, then the back of the Razor is 5/8 above.

I see too now that the springs are held in place by the rear sight, either the rear sight could be machined to match the slide surface, that way you could always go back to open sights by replacing it, or a piece of aluminum could be cut and fit snug to that it would not fall out.

We have a bit of thread drift here. There are no springs under the 745 rear sight. It is more like a 1911 series 70. To my mind it should be a fairly easy milling job. Just stay all the way back on the slide to avoid the extractor pin access. Thanks guys, I'm still looking for a shop that is willing to try. bob
