Some of my former colleagues just got sent home from Kyiv. That said, the State Department has often been excessively cautious. No one wants to get our people Benghazied.
I have no words, I hope for peace as war only seems to produce anguish. Joe

Some may already be there. The Pentagon does things like that. They say they are getting the troops ready to deploy, when in fact they already have boots on the ground. Don't want the opposition to know exactly when is going on. I have seen this before.

We have a young man from Ukraine, studying at the local university, who attends our church. Week before last, his parents visited. They told me that they live 30 miles from the Russian border. Wondering just how far a "minor incursion" is.

Hurting aggressors economically is often a more effective action.
If we were still energy independent and had the surplus to supply European allies with oil and gas it would severely hurt the aggressors oil based economy.
The same strategy could be used for current aggressor in the South China Sea with a boycott of goods made there including those beginning with the letter i.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Troops on alert (they are not deployed) will be handed over to NATO if deployed. Ivan the Terrible Putin does not want Ukraine to join NATO, hence his latest actions. The NATO troops, if deployed, will not go to Ukraine because Ukraine is not part of NATO, they would go to adjoining countries and hang out for a while. At the end of the day, Putin gets what he wants, everyone else comes off as complete incompetents, and China takes Taiwan while nobody's paying attention. Just another day in DC.
Doesn't seem to be going that well there either. I had a former coworker on that one and the stuff in the article (notably from the non political army times) echoes his complaints. Law enforcement for LE problems, soldiers for military problems.

Well, if any US citizens don't get on a plane in short order and Russia does invade the Ukraine, I suggest they are to dumb for me to care about. Kinda like the nit wits who went for a hike along Iran's border. When you know the manure is fixing to hit the propellers big time and don't head out or at the very least get your family out you are on your own as far as I am concerned.
Plus, if we do send in troops they will be expected to treat the Russians with the utmost respect, no calling them Ivans or anything else in the least bit derogatory and heavens forbid anyone that is not in a complete Russian regulation uniform with their hat on and all the buttons buttoned should get injured in anyway.

Seems like the Guard is suffering from a classic military management method - mushroom management. You keep the troops in the dark and feed them ********. Thought we might have learned this doesn't work during the days of the "Five O'Clock Follies" in Saigon.
At present the only things that I can do about this situation are:
Pray that we don't get into a shooting war.
Contact my congressional representatives and voice my concerns.

Here we go again ( and again, and again, and again ). Just a small number of troops to provide US citizen security. In my lifetime, I've heard this as a precursor to disaster too many times. 
Haven't been deployed yet unless something has changed in the last hour.
8,500 would be a "trip wire" to test the will of the Russians to get in a shooting war directly with the US. Putin probably doesn't want that.

March 8, 1965, there was another "trip wire". Under the direct order of President Johnson, some three thousand five hundred Marines of the Ninth Marine Expeditionary Brigade came ashore on the beach at Da Nang. BY 1968 there were 500,000 US troops there. 58,220 gave their very lives.

Being of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish decent, this one has my attention. My people are from the Belarus area and have gotten the short end of the stick more than once.

Folks who don't understand the border often think deploying the military there is a good solution. It's not, and hasn't been since 1914.
