I think I looked at a 845 Model of 1998 today. I wasn’t searching for one and don’t have a serious interest in getting one. (I’m more than happy to have my MPC 845 Limited.)

The example I looked at had the front slide serrations and SDN prefix BUT it didn’t have the “Model of 1998” billboard. I did not know that these were out there, (if they are.) That is my question, were there any offered this way or did someone remove the billboard? I couldn’t see any indication of a removal/refinish but it wouldn’t be hard to do.

I like the sterile look of the MPC’s and don’t appreciate the bold 1998 billboard of the SDN’s. I don’t use front cocking serrations. The seller is 45 min away and I’ve done business with him before. For me the asking price is way too high considering the cosmetic condition. I didn’t discuss the price because I’d never seen one without the billboard and wasn’t sure about it.

Thanks for any input.

Jim , I've never seen anything like what you're describing . I haven't seen him around here lately , but if anyone knows it would be skijor or Sevens . Were there any import/export marks on it ? Could be something made for Europe but never made it there . Or a one off , like a salesman example . I have one of each , and have to say the 845's are about the finest 45's made .

With stainless guns a buff to touch up cosmetic issues usually would not leave any signs of a refinish. It would not take much to remove the billboard, it is not a very deep marking

My self, regardless of using them or not, I like the look of forward cocking serrations

However if the price is too high and the pistol does not speak to you, then walk away

I will never sell mine because it was manufactured on my Birthday

OK, it shoots pretty Awesome as well :D

No there aren’t any import/export marks. It looks like a “Model of 1998” without the billboard. It has a very low serial number assuming they started at SDN0001. The box even has the 170097 Product Code.

I left my contact info with the seller and he got back to me this morning. (That’s a good sign.) He’s come down $500.00 but I still feel the price is too high. Internally/mechanically it’s in real nice shape including the bore. Very little wear. Unfortunately it’s cosmetically challenged externally.

A second series Model of '98 was my gateway drug to the world of S&W Performance Center Limited pistols. My collection never had a center or a focus until I brought that pistol home. Since that day I've figured out what my collection is all about, for me.

I will agree that the billboard script is unattractive. I'll further agree that the forward cocking serrations, by and large, are an abomination on semiautomatic pistols and I seek out the debate because arguing against makes me feel like the good guys could win. 🤣

I believe someone polished off the billboard script. The serial prefix is our best indicator of that. I'm certainly curious of the price, but if he dropped $500 and you still think it's crazy then my best guess is yeah, his price is crazy.
