Can a 9 round magazine be used in a Smith and Wesson mod 39-2.
Thanks for bringing that up Shawn, that's absolutely true. Just like the word buffalo is used to describe the American Bison. There are no Buffalo in America. Hence Buffalo Bill Cody would be more correctly called Bison Bill Cody. Since both terms are used interchangeably it does cause some confusion. I'm sure there are other terms which are used interchangebly either correctly or incorrectly but both forms are accepted as correct.Technically and historically, pistol is an all-encompassing term which includes both REVOLVERS and SELF-LOADERS, i.e. handguns.
Sam Colt referred to his invention as a "revolving pistol."
Thus, there are semi-automatic, or self-loading, pistols and revolving pistols.
Common usage these days is, as usual, imprecise. I agree with you that people tend to drop the "semi-automatic" off of the correct description, which would be "semi-automatic pistol," but that does not make it precise, or either technically or historically accurate.
I refer to a semi-auto handgun as a pistol and a revolver as a revolver. As I understand it that is the current use of the word pistol despite or because of any historical or technical accuracy.
By the way, we picked up some Bison burger today and this gimpy Injun's looking forward to it. Me likeum buffalo.

One of my pet peeves also! Magazine, not a "clip"
9-rounder in 39-2 works fine, but looks ugly.
It is unfortunate that S&W no longer makes the floorplate which improves the looks of the 9rd magazines in 1st and 2nd gen pistols.

Thanks for the eyball on it W.E.G. I'm not too worried about looks just want the extra mags for the range. The pistol only came with one

The answer is YES. Actually it would probably be hard to find a new 8-round magazine for a M39.
The 9-round works great but as already mentioned they "stick out" of the gun and it looks ugly. As also mentioned the floor plates that made the 9-round magazine look more like a part of the grip are not made any more.
I wrote S&W and they told me that they don't make them any more but suggested that I tried:

Jack First Gunshop - First in Gun Parts - Rapid City, South Dakota
Since I live in Denmark (Europe) a phone call could cost more then a new gun so I wanted to send the two companies a mail. Well the first NEVER answered my mail and the second don't have a mail address so I'm SOL
Any way if any one have any idea where these floor plates can be found let us know (I'll even pay good money).

PPS I'm not sure (maybe because my technical english is not that good) but in this post it sounds as if the writer put the inside parts of a 9 round S&W magazine into a 8-round magazine body thereby making the old 8-round hold 9 rounds and NOT sticking out of the gun. I tried and had no problems getting 9 rounds into the old 8-round magazine (now with the new 9-round spring etc.) but the magazine would not "lock" in the gun. What am I missing)? By the way S&W 8-round magazine are in fact a copy of the Walther P-38 magazines except for the "lock-function". Probably makes sense since the M39 is based on the P38.

Smith-Nut, the reason the 8 round magazine with 9 round internals will not lock into the pistol is simple, the magazine body is shorter on the 39 and 39-2 magazines compared to the current manufacture gen 3 magazines. Sure, the older mags will hold 9 founds with the spring and follower from the 9 round mag, but there is no extra space for the rounds to compress further into the mag when inserted into the pistol. The top round contacts the bottom of the slide when inserted and is pushed down slightly by it. If you remove the floor plates on the 8 and 9 round mags, you can clearly see the 9 round mag is longer, allowing more internal space for the extra round to be pushed further into the magazine, and allowing the magazine to lock into the pistol. I am only referring to FACTORY Smith & Wesson magazines, btw.
