Just started shooting my new 9mm M&P Pro... Great fun.

However here in CT we have a 10 round mag law. I can only get 9 rounds in these 2 mags. Genuine S&W. The law regards mags, not mag + chamber. My Keltec .32 has a 10 round mag that holds 10 (+one in the chamber if you like).

Anybody have some of these 10 rd M&P mags????? Hold 9 or 10??

Difficulty loading the 10th round in a new mag is well documented. Even worse when using an Uplula.

There are mods you can do to the magazine follower that will fix the problem. I did it to both my 10 rounds mags and they are perfect now.

Trim the legs on your magazine followers down a little bit. Take about 3/16" off them.
Either a sharp razor blade or a file will work.
The 10th round will slide right in afterward.

Here are some pics for reference:

My 12 rd only holds 11 even after shooting over 350 rds
My 17 holds 17

rgarbarino....is what Hillbilly77 did what you are talking about. Any differences in your method?

Hey, thanks Hillbilly77 for the photos etc. I just wonder why S&W made the mags that way??

I'm embarrassed to ask, but I can't figure out how to disassemble these mags!! How's it done?

Small button on bottpm of mag. push it in with dissassembly tool and slide the base back, sping and follower will come out the bottom!

Perfect...I had looked in that hole expecting to find a screw. Didn't dawn on me that it might be what you said. Thanks!

I just fixed one of my mags per the directions above. Sanded down the base of the follower until almost all of that little arc on the bottom was gone. Now I can load 10 even using the UpLula. By the way, I give the UpLula 100% satisfaction rating. The thing is fantastic...if you don't have one, get it.

It amazes me that a world famous gun mfg with incredible mfg knowledge and experience, and great designers can't do better than the guys on a forum. But it's true....manufacturers design great products, but forum people actually make them work.

Thanks much for the help (now if I can only get 17 rounds in a 10 rd mag!!!)

The strange thing about the 10 round mag issue is what works for one mag doesn't seem to work for all mags. I've sanded down the followers on all of my wife's 9mm mags and saw no difference whatsoever. I can get the 10th round in, but loading the mag into the frame takes a real whack. I'm going to get really aggressive with one of the mag followers tonight and see if that makes a difference.

A 10 round limit is not a suggestion or a guideline. It's a hard limit with the consequence of committing a felony in certain states.

The tolerances are tight to ensure there's no reasonable way possible to load #11.

I can use my Uplula to easily load 9 rounds. I can barely squeeze in #10 by hand.

Your issue is likely that the mag spring has bottomed out. You can trim the follower until the cows come home with no improvement. You might need to clip a coil or two off the spring.

I am *NOT* suggesting you do this. Clip too much and you may exceed legal mag limits.

More important, you can mess up feed reliability. Note that Glock says not to use reduced capacity mags (such as a 10 round G19/G17 mag) for a duty weapon as they are not sufficiently reliable. I do not know if that is applicable to S&Ws, but it is generally true. If I had to comply with a reduced capacity mag law, I would buy something designed around that (e.g., a Shield), or carry a revolver.

But there is no law anywhere about owning two handguns and having 10 rounds to fire in each hand. The equivalent of a 20 round mag! In other words, the 10 round law is not thought out and is dopey. It's hard to respect such laws. In almost all cases of a nut case going wild with a gun, the shooter is carrying multiple guns.
And if you have ever watched how fast a trained person can change mags to reload their handgun, it's a wonder.

After improving the mag I did note that it's harder to insert click in, however, I think that just means that the last round has little wiggle room to give up when pressed into the chamber area. But it seems to chamber just as well based on my limited testing.

They use the same spring in the 10, 12, and 17 round mags. I took a loop off the spring of my 10 round mags, and can load them without feeling like I'm going to break my thumb.
