I've been looking at holsters for my 940-1 however, I don 't see any manufactures that say their holster fits a 940. I'm guessing that I could use the holsters for a 642 and I'd be okay. Can anyone confirm this or recommend a better J frame to match the 940 to a holster?

The 940 is a J frame and any holster that is made for a J frame will work,, With one caveat.

The Continental "hammer-less" J frames don't secure well in holsters that have a hammer strap, but there are holsters that put the strap behind the trigger guard or use a compression style retention.

Good Luck.. :)

A 940 has a thicker barrel than most other J Frames and this could be problematic when choosing certain holsters. As an example, my 940 will not fit into the Galco pancake holster that I have for my Model 60. On the other hand, my 940 does fit perfectly into the Dillon Leather pancake holster that I had originally bought for a short Ruger SP101. If you are looking for a new leather holster that is boned tightly to the contours of the revolver, I suggest you buy something made for the Ruger.

Any holster that fits a 640 Centennial should also reliably carry a 940.
That's incorrect. It may work for soft holsters, but the bigger diameter barrel on the 940 will not work in hard holsters built for the smaller 640 and other standard 1 7/8" J frame barrels. The early Fobus holsters would be one example of this, but there are many others that will not work as well. You may be OK with some of the leather ones.
