Gentlemen:

I turn to you for help in preserving the illusion that my pal has concerning my knowledge of S&Ws. He assumes, incorrectly, that I know everything about Smiths and often comes to me with questions. In fact, my knowledge may be a mile wide but only an inch deep!

Today's inquiry concerns this neat little Smith. A square butt 3 inch stainless Chiefs seems to me to be an odd but interesting configuration. That is what he thought, too, and is why he bought it at a recent local show.

The serial number on the butt which I think places it in the late 1980s.

The no dash Model 60 marking.

My pal wants me to tell him if this revolver is something unusual like a special order or perhaps a distributor-exclusive concoction like something would see offered by Lew Horton or RSR in the past. I don't know as these are outside of my knowledge base, but lean toward the latter distributor exclusive angle.

In trying to chase this down I checked the Standard Catalog. I found a Product Code 102304 that seems to match this configuration.

So, can you guys make me look like a genius to my pal and tell me if this one is indeed something special? I realize that a SWHF letter would reveal all, and that's probably the next step, but I wanted to check with you guys first before advising him to go that route.

Thanks for any input!

Regards,
Charlie

I think these were done for John Jovino New York City. Some thing like 170 produced but parts hung around S&W for a while.
You might want to quiz DR.Jinks about these.

Thank you, Toyman. I will look into that further as that sounds like the answer to the question.

3” SB M60

Got one of these. It is also S/N AEV. The Jury is still out on this one. The Cylinder was binding after firing 5 Rounda Had the Barrel to Cylinder opened up .004 to .008. Need to take to range and test fire.

Perfect. My reputation with my pal as a Smith savant (completely undeserved) will be intact.

With Toyman's lead I was able to find several threads on the Forum here that confirm these 3 inch square butts to be Jovino Specials. Here is one of the better threads:
John Jovino 60 all in one post

You guys are the best!

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it............ :D

Smith never really embraced the 3" bbl models, for whatever reason. They made them, but not in large numbers, AFAIK.

If I had the $$, I'd buy every 3" revolver I saw at a gun show if it was decently priced. They're the perfect carry size, IMO.

OP, I think your friend got a super nice Model 60, IMO.

Charlie,

Your friend has a one of 1,000 Jovino Special from late 1984.

Toyman's reference to 170 relates to a 1972 extremely limited run
that S&W finally assembled and shipped in 1978. They were in the
R56xxx-R57xxx serial range, and they were a Model 60-1.

Jovino ordered 600 2" square butts in 1984, and as the story goes
they were so popular the company ordered 1,000 3" models.

Here's the Jovino ad.

Among Chiefs nuts it's a desirable find.

I bought one of these at the Symposium back in June. These are awesome revolvers! Mine starts with AEU

The one I showed serial number R57306. Was as new I didn't want to shoot it so I sold it several years ago.
