I picked up a Colt Police Positive 22 cal L.C. Target Pistol with adjustable front and rare sights. The condition, over all, is excellent: bluing, brown small checkered grips with .gold madalian and barrel (like a mirror). Only wear on the wheel and very slight. Over all condition is a good 98%.The serial# is 39189 and I roughly place manf. date 1931. Just a very nice Colt. Unable to post pictured because of weather condition. I will post pictured later. I paid 440.... No matter. It looks great and I wanted a nice, small 22 cal. Colt.. It fits the bill. If someone changed it, they did one hell of a job!
Do these Colts have an area of collecting and a rough value would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

Fortunately there isn't a lot of collectability yet in this era of Colts. I say fortunately because you can still buy them relatively cheap. The smaller frame models tend to bring less than the large frames as well. I am curious what type of adjustable front sight the gun has, as I've never seen one on a 4" barrel, and most of the rear sights were drift adjustable only. I see these pre Python era double actions in the $300-$500 range fairly regularly. That said, a 4" Police Positive in 22lr that had been customized with King or Micro sights would attract a different set of collectors and quite a bit more money.

I'm not into Colt DAs but I do take notice of Target/ Match type.
I my area they are bringing a little more than S&W of same era
and similar model. I have never seen a 4" PP target and have
no idea of price. I can't think of a high condition pre war Colt
target revolver that I wouldn't pay $500 for, just to flip it.

Neat little gun, but I can't find any mention of a 4" Police Positive Target. Gun Values only shows a 6" was available. Front sight looks to be correct for a 6" gun. Could have been cut down and soldered back on, wouldn't have been that unusual. 6" in that condition has a book value of $500-600, if it has been cut down then worth less (though in that "shooter" price range some buyers might prefer the 4"). IF original, and left the factory as a 4" you might have something!

Have a look at the link.
I'm with gdogs, I've never seen one with a barrel shorter than 6". Your's looks nice and if it was reasonably priced I probably would have bought it as well.

Police Positive

Those sights look a lot like the sight on the Colt OMT I had. Possibly a transplant.

I like it. The rear sight is absolutely correct, the front appears to have a replaced blade (not unusual). I can find no reference to any in other than 6", but Colt, like Smith, was open to special orders. The larger frame Officers Model Target was cataloged in 6" and occasionally in 4.5 and 7.5", but could be ordered in 5 and 5.5".
I believe Colt letters are more expensive than Smith, but if the front sight base appears original, it might be worthwhile. Either way, you done good.

Bob

Looks like it has been shortened. Compared to this one, the front sight base sits closer to the muzzle, and the crown is less rounded.

I have never heard of that model and never knew the PP had a target version. I would have also thought target versions came with 6" barrels. But, I'm not a Colt expert either.

For what you paid you got a nice gun, enjoy it. I have an Officers Model Target in .22 rf made in 1930 which was the first year offered. It is the most accurate .22 rf revolver I own.

One of my high school friends had a .22 Colt PP, except it was chambered for the .22 WRF/.22 Rem Special. It's been too long ago for me to remember if it had target sights or not. We didn't shoot it much - even back then the ammo was quite a bit more expensive than .22 Short, which was about all we could afford.
