There are a couple of topics concerning the mags dropping from the Shield 40 along with many so called fixes, but I believe that this forum could do a great job of helping those that might be considering either not purchasing or to go ahead and purchase the Shield 40 which I own and it performs flawlessly, but mine is one of the earlier weapons. The Serial number is one of the best ways to know what batch of weapons are either affected with the problem or not.

I will start this investigation with the full serial number of my Shield 40 and it is DXT0579! This is a flawless weapon just like the other 5 M&P's that I own!

All of my M&P's including my Shield also begin with DX and perform flawlessly.

So it seems that the DXTnnnn serial batch is one that is in working order now for those that have weapons that do not work properly, in other words drop the mag while firing!

My full size M&P is flawless too....must admit the serial # starts with DVY and I wouldn't trade it for any other...just sayin!

i've got DXT0569 (shield 40) and it works fine as i've stated before. the pistol has never dropped any magazines.

i put a "bump" in my mags to help them seat more securely and to offer the mag catch a better hold on the mag.

this modification was done as insurance against the dreaded mag dropping problem described on this forum.

I ended up with a mag dropper, mag released on every round fired. Didn't make a difference if there are 7 or 1 in the magazine. Sent her back to S&W got a new mag catch and "bump" magazine. Haven't had a failure yet

Serial number DXV9XXX

I've reported no problems with my 40 Shield already on the other thread, but wanted to add my serial number here (even though it is from an earlier run than to Houdini's). It begins with DXP. I received the pistol in late May and have been very pleased with it.

Mine is DXX1381 and was a dropper when I sent it to S&W on 8/20/2012. It should be back home today. If I have time I I'll take it to the local indoor range and find out if it's still a dropper.

What are you expecting to accomplish with sampling sizes of one or two?

Not try to accomplish anything other than finding serial numbers that seems to either have or do not have the magazine drop problem. My magazines do not have any kind of dimple and perform flawlessly. My Shield happens to be one of the earlier ones it is possible that with other batches during the manufacturing process that QC missed something that did not occur during a particular batch.

Of course there will always be a weapon that is just not right even in a batch for whatever reason, keep in mind that the demand for these weapons is tremendous and it is possible that mistakes have been overlooked when they otherwise wouldn't. Personally if I found a weapon with a serial number of DXTnnnn I would feel comfortable but possibly not DXVnnnn!

The more reports of affected serial numbers then the greater likelihood you will be confident in making a purchase decision!

I am a DXP in .40 as well with no problems. :)

My DXX is a dropper. It arrived back at S&W yesterday for repair. The customer service rep told me to send only the pistol, not the mags, back for repair.
